we're ready to replace our backup base batteries. we're using Werker 12v deep cycle batteries, same size as for scooters. these are 33ah @ 20 hrs, and the new replacement is a 35ah. we power our base receiver and 35w radio with the one battery. replacement costs are about $100/ea - does anyone use a manageable 12v battery that is not a full-size car battery? what brands, and dealers? just looking at options. Batteriesplus is the cheapest place we have found previously and also currently has best prices and in stock.
thanks.

I was using Nautilus Marine Battery, kind of pricey one (big and heavy). Powered PacCrest 35W radio + Trimble R8 Base. Never had any problems at -30C. May be, for hotter climates, a car 12V battery is good enough.

I am using a Deka brand battery, same basic battery as the OEM Interstate battery that came from Pacific Crest, might be another source to check out.

We power two Trimble 5602 robotic total stations with jumpstart battery booster packs from BatteriesPlus. They seem to have steady juice, last several days and charge quickly. We like the LED power status lights and the built-in jumper cable connectors. Our newest unit has a power port for auto connectors (like cig. lighter) and a USB port.

The units we purchased have lasted over three years with moderate use, have nice carry handles and are not too heavy. Check them out at battery and auto parts stores.

I use an optima blue top battery.

I am thinking that a SLA battery may be better suited, for a base battery. Because the power drain characteristics are long slow drain, without the need for "Starting Power".

That is why Sealed Lead Acid Batteries (SLA) are the battery of choice with GPS mfrs, and are included as standard stock equipment.

Optimas are a great battery, but too heavy to tote very far as we sometimes need to do. the Werker is about half the weight (27 vs 59 lbs) and less than half the cost, which is important when buying 2. I do have an Optima in my RV.....
