Hi y'all, I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. I have been tasked with figuring out how to transfer crd & raw files from an HP48gx with TDS using a USB to Serial converter onto a Win 7 desktop. Our XP desktop uses SurveyLink to transfer files but that PC is close to death and we were told surveylink isn't available for Win 7. We were told that Spectra Precision Survey Office should work but so far nothing seems to connect using the SPSO trial version. Anything y'all can suggest would be greatly appreciated.
We have recently (last two years) phased out all our 48s. They're still in the office and still work great, but we felt it's time to retire them. I'm sure there is someone that can help you out.
I would like to let you know we keep one old dinosaur work station up and running just for those reasons. It comes in handy a lot when we crack open a ten year old file. It drives our IT guy nuts to work on a PC that still has a floppy drive, but it's worth it because it has saved my bacon several times.
Long live dinosaurs...B-)
AutoCAD C3D on the bottom of the tool ribbon you will see "Create Ground Data" open that drop down and you will see "Survey Data Collection Link" open this tab and you will have the old TDS link. I know this works up through 2014 I have not tried it in 2015.

What COGO-CAD software are you using?
Most still retain the ability to communicate with the HP48GX w/ TDS Survey Cards in them.
If that doesn't work, TDS ForeSight DXM will run in a Windows7 environment and will communicate with the 48 through a USB to serial adapter cable.
I never had any luck with the converter cable you speak of using Win 7.
Maybe look for a PCI serial card and then use the old HyperTerminal to read and transfer the files?
Remember Kermit Transfer Protocol?
Found a website that speaks of trying what you wish but with XP. Maybe it will work in Win 7?

Also found a website that tells you what files to copy from a working XP machine to Win 7 as HyperTerminal not longer exists but still wors in Win 7 with the XP files.

Found this also:

If you can get the HP to talk to Win 7 with HyperTerminal, you may be able to see your file directories on the 48 and TDS card. Worth a shot.
Good luck

Carlson will download TDS in the Survey>Data Collectors menu, but you'll probably have to have a USB to serial cable. Most newer computers don't even offer serial as an option.
I picked up a couple of rebuilt basic optiplex computers (an XP Pro and a Win 7 pro from a place in Jacksonville, Texas at $250 for both to have the serial port in the back to hook my null modem cables in and use SMI Transfer v7
It will also load directly into Carlson on a computer with a serial port and null modem cable
I think it will work with a USB to Serial converter with the null modem cable
good luck
We are using Carlson 2015. I just found out about DXM yesterday after speaking with a local software technician, apparently it is no longer available. However, he said he is going to try to find a version for us to purchase. Thanks for the info
Thank you, Sir, I appreciate all the links and info.
Excellent I will try that seeing that we use Carlson. Thank you very much
Thank you much, I may have to go that way.
Thanks y'all! I really appreciate the help/advice from everyone. SC is a great community.
Thank you! That worked perfectly. Gotta love Carlson
