(Windows 7)

Is there a way using Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer)to navigate to a file by giving it a path, or do you have to navigate manually by picking?

For example, you can copy the path and filename of a file by hitting "shift rt-click" on a file. Say you go to another Windows Explorer window, is there a way to "search" or something and paste in the path and filename and have WE go to that file?

Thanks,

Steve

I've never tried it with Win 7, but it used to work that way in xp, anyway. If I typed "C:Program FilesOpenOffice.org 3programswriter.exe" and hit enter, Open Office Writer would launch.

If I do the same thing for a non-executable, the file will be opened by the default program assigned to that file type.

Newt,

I can do that in DOS prompt window, but there seems to be no place to type it in a WE window.

I tried pasting the path filename into the search window, but it tries to search the internet for the file.

Thanks,

Steve

Try hitting the alt key to expose the menu tree - it may expose the navigation window. Beyond that I'll have to experiment later on when I get on my Win 7 machine.

I just tried it again.

If I paste the filename path into the search field, it WILL navigate to that file.

Sorry for the goose chase.

Thanks,

Steve

[edit] it only seems to work on local drives, NOT on network drives!!!?????

That's strange - I assume you're using twin backslashes for the network comp name. That's the mistake I usually make.

Although things may be different for you if you're on a domain versus a workgroup...

I can make it work sometimes and then sometimes it won't work (network or local)

I think were a domain.

network: "F:LP11DREAM FINDERS ABERDEEN U1956-11-078 L203.dwg"

local "C:EasyBLOCKSsteve_rtext.dwg"

I use PowerDesk which works way better than windows Explorer and does way more regarding files.

Thanks Mike.

May have to explore your idea, but it seems there must be an easier way.

Hi Dan,

When I do that and paste in "F:MSLTDSJUSTIN CLOT JOBSBARRINGTON ESTSEPT17BARR24.asc"

it switches to Internet Explorer, and the text in the address bar changes to
http://%22f/MSL/TDS/JUSTIN%20C/LOT%20JOBS/BARRINGTON%20EST/SEPT17BARR24.asc%22 and it trys to search the internet for the file.

If I try again and remove the quotes on the orignal paste (i.e. F:MSLTDSJUSTIN CLOT JOBSBARRINGTON ESTSEPT17BARR24.asc) it opens the file. That is useful, but I wish it would navigate to the file folder in WE.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

Yes you need to enter the address without quotes. To open the folder containing the file you will also need to remove the file name from the address. That should open the containing folder. If you include a program or file name, windows assumes you want to open that object.

Hope this helps

Dan
