Just ordered a refurbished HP desk top with more than anything I need, but it has a COM and LPT1 port.

What software does or does not play nice with the above software?

Once this is loaded with all my files, a new laptop is next.

64 bit or 32 bit? That's where a good portion of the issues come in. 64 Bit gives better performance but won't load programs that have 16 bit installers. Most other issues can be handled with permissions and setting programs to run under compatibility mode.

We use win7 at the office and I run Trimble Business Center, TDS, Autocad 2009 LD, Autocad civil3d 2011 & 13 and arcgis 10 on mine with no "real" issues. Only problems are updates to the trimble and tds, because they are not "firm wide" software and we cannot just download programs or updates without contacting our IT department...But that really has nothing to do with it, they run just fine.

32 Bit

There are newer models available with more memory and storage but lacking the hardware ports, which I wanted.

From what I've seen and heard, many programs are still written only for 32 bit, so having the extra performance of 64 bit is useless.

I have also been made aware that there seem to be "issues" with the 64 bit versions of Office. As a result, we had to install the 32 bit version of Office at a museum I volunteer at.
