2 of my favorite iPhone apps are FieldAssets by LBS Wireless and Commander Compass by Happymagenta. Am considering an iPad mini with data plan, hoping this makes these apps easier to see and use. ATT has a 3GB data plan for $30 a month and a certified like new 16GB mini for $300.
Would appreciate feed back on similar apps and mobile devices.
My wife advises keep the iPhone and carry a magnifying glass.
Just purchased an IPad mini for my son for Christmas. 16 GB brand new for $300 at Best Buy. Not sure why they would be charging the same for a "certified" (read previously used and then repaired or refurbished possibly)for the same price. Unless it is for the retina display, those go for about $400 new. I did not spring for the extra $100 for the retina display.
Did you get him a data plan, what are his favorite apps?
The wife's people are from West Point / Lanett.
If you had an Android phone you could set it up as a WiFi hotspot and skip the 3G option on the tablet...
While I'm new (1 week) to Apple products, it looks like you can use your iPhone to "Set Up Personal Hotspot" described as "Share your iPhone's internet connection with your computer and iOS devices via WiFi ...". So maybe you could connect an iPad through that.
Also got a new iPad Mini Retina, wonderful little device. Consider a matte screen protector to minimize glare outside.
Maybe the difference is iPad with 4g vs wifi only.
This iPad is wifi only, no cellular data plan necessary or even possible.
I have an IPhone, and an IPad with WiFi only. Our phone service is with AT&T. Last month, I changed our plan to a family share plan, to save a few bucks. We have unlimited Talk and Text with 1 gig of data, with tethering. I have the IPad set up to tether to both phones, if the WiFi is down. Last year when AT&T had the big uverse outage, we got AT&T to upgrade SWMBO's phone plan to include tethering during the outage and it worked great. I could connect the IPad and computers to her phone and surf till hearts content. We dropped thre service after they got our DSL fixed, but I know it works and have used it extensively.
My wife is considering getting a IPad Mini. We are trying to decid if we want one that is WiFi and 4G, or WiFi only. If we go the 4G route it is only $10 per month.
Moved to the same plan today with ATT. Was told to use caution about iPhone battery overheating during tether.
> I did not spring for the extra $100 for the retina display.
For your son it's justifiable. But for work related consider that there is more to it than just the display.
1) The display is much better, text is razer sharp.
2) The Retina contains a 64bit A7 processor vs the A5.
3) The Retina contains 1GB or RAM vs 512mb (twice as much).
4) Protection from becoming obsolete in the future.
Many benchmarks show the Retina much faster than the previous generation.
