TerraModel Question - Point numbers

I tried importing a point list (about 3000 points) with point numbers in the 20 million range and it would not work. I had already imported two files with more points that had point numbers in the 60 million range without a hitch. I thought it might just be too many points so I tried again with a new drawing and the 20 million labeled points with no luck.

I sent it to someone else. They added 60m to the point numbers and used the original point number for the description. The original point files did not have descriptions. Terramodel took the 80 million point numbers along with the two larger files using 60 million point numbers without a problem.

The point numbers are part of a 30 sq. mile grid out of a much larger grid provided by someone else. Any change in the numbering system is creating an opportunity for confusion and mistakes down the road.

Any ideas?

The only thing I can think of is configure for more memory to be used.

I've had instances similar to yours where, for some reason TM seemed to think there was an awfully lot more data in a file that was actually smaller.

At those times, the larger file would open, while the smaller file would come back with a memory warning(I hope you at least get a reason for the rejection).

error: "Failed to creat point - probably either no alpha ID storage, too little object storage or a locked layer"
How is that for a vague statement.

There are no alpha characters in the points numbers, I have changed the object storage settings and I have tried several different layers, none of which were locked.

Thanks,
James

Just for grins, I deleted all but the first 20 lines and got the same error trying to import just 20 points.

I assume you mean you have changed tha "max objects" setting under system settings. Be sure the import format is set correctly, maybe a comma in there instead of a space? If you don't have descriptors, and don't have the D in the format, but there is a comma after the last column, might be screwing it up

I changed the max objects,

The files came as .csv with three columns P,E,N that worked on the two files in the 60m range but not the 20m

I went into excel and changed the columns to P,N,E and set the import settings accordingly, it still didn't work.

I think it just doesn't like 20 million point numbers.

Thanks,
James

Under "settings" then "point settings" what is the highest point number allowed? I'm only at ver 9.8 so maybe this doesn't work in later versions.

Max integer pn 33,554,432

According to that, the 60m points should not have worked but the 20m points would.

I considered that maybe it would handle point numbers in the 60 million but would not handle a 40 million gap. That when I tried a new drawing and the 20m still would not import.

I tried changing the max point number, it still doesn't work

I give up.

Thanks,
James

just a shot in the dark...

I know nothing about Terramodel.

Maybe there is an invisible character lurking in the file with the 20million numbers in it?

Try cutting and pasting into a clean notepad text file.

In excel I made 3 new columns and added 1 to the original values. Each calculated the correct new number ruling out any alpha character like O for 0 sneaking in.

Tried that (after your suggestion) same results.

I have done give up and moved on to other things.
Thanks for the help.
