Yesterday I offered to trade a bright shiny new jump drive (because my old TDS Ranger won't recognize it) with my teenage daughter for one of her old ones.
I told her that I want the smallest & oldest one she had. She said to try this one daddy, I got it at Big Lots. It worked, but she had a lot of her files on it, so we went to Big Lots to buy one or two for me.
So we went to the store and she pointed to the exact same jump drives like the one we tested at home. They were $12 each, so I bought 2.
They both work fine on my PC. One works, and one does not work on my Ranger.
Why? How do I make them both work on my Ranger?
Are they both formatted the same, or is one NTFS and the other FAT32?

When I list the properties of each they both say FAT32. But upon closer inspection of the packaging I think I found a clue:
When in doubt my first step with a new flash drive is to format it.

I think I have been down this road before, with no real luck.
Is there some simple way to format the flash drive that is not being recognized by my Ranger?
You know, something like DOS FORMAT E: FAT32 XP ISH....
I've never delved quite this deep into it, but a quick search found this:
It mentions ExFAT being the format Windows CE used. Also, there were some links that looked like freeware for formatting to some older architecture (such as ExFAT).
I think some of the new formats are aimed at making the most out of the whopping large capacity available on flash drives these days.
When Windows CE came into its own a 256MB flash drive was pretty common.
Well I tried to format to NTFS then to exFAT, no luck...
Try formatting it to FAT32. I have a 32GB Sandisk formatted FAT32 that works fine with my Topcon FC2500 (WinCE 5.0)
Edit: Alternatively, insert one of the drives that works with your DC into your PC, then in Windows Explorer, right click on the drive letter and select properties to see what system it is formatted with.

Just tried FAT32, still no luck. I checked the properties first this morning and they BOTH were already FAT32.

Try this portable app. I never had any luck with most
small usb drive format programs, but this one seems to
work with just about anything I can throw at it.
It's also a portable app so no registry changes.
You can use it then delete it.
I'm thinking it can format to ExFat

Thanks SS. I tried it with exFAT and NTFS, still no luck.
There are a bunch of other setting options too, I wonder if I need to change one of them?
