Gent,

I'm trying to upgrade a Ranger to Spectra Precision from 5.2.X to 5.5.1. Got the licensed renewed and downloaded a huge file.

Now that SP has started to act more like Trimble, they no longer talk to end users. Dealers only.

I am trying to find the instructions for updating the DC. No luck on their site. Anyone done this recently? Is it done from a thumb drive, a USB cable, WiFi or what?

Trying to get this done today for field work tomorrow.

Any hints would be appreciated.

JA,

You will want to sync the unit with your computer (the same way you take out jobs). Download the file to your computer, then double click on the file. The installation should start automatically. It will let you know when it is finished.

I recommend going to:

Main Menu > File > Register Modules

Write down the module code (should be 9 digits). I like to make sure I have this just in case I have a problem in the installation, it at the very least will get you going with what you currently have.

5.5.1 is solid. I believe Spectra has many of their bugs worked out. Feel free to contact me if you run into anything. I am testing as well.

The advice to record the activation code in the Register Modules screen is good if you should need to revert to the older version you are upgrading from. But it will not activate the newly installed version. Those days are gone. Each new version update requires a new activation code to turn on the modules on your license.

Assuming the computer you are upgrading through is connected to the internet, the installer should actually go to the Spectra Precision website and pull down the activation code for your new install. Failing that, your dealer should have supplied you with a certificate for the Software Maintenance renewal and the activation code for 5.5.1 should be on that certificate.

"Update procedure
For the update procedure and downloads, refer to Spectra Precision Partners or SpectraPrecision.com.
Survey Pro 5.5 enforces the requirement for a valid warranty prior to updates. The Survey Pro 5.5 installation program will use an Internet connection to verify the serial number of the data collector for warranty coverage. If the unit is not covered, you can continue the installation, but the software will only work in demo mode on the data collector until a warranty is purchased. You can also choose to discontinue the installation and keep the fully licensed version that is currently installed on the unit.
If an Internet connection is unavailable at the time of installation, and the software installed on the unit is the current minor update version, the installation will continue.
The installation program will warn you if your warranty has expired and you can choose to continue or cancel the installation at that point."

Updating the was pretty easy for me. Once you have the dc connected with the PC then just double click the installer file. Then follow direction on the screen.

Thank all of you gents.

I had seen the "update procedure" on the web site but no where does it mention the USB printer cable needed to make the connection. I saw this done a couple of years ago and forgot that detail. I always export and import by using a flash drive.

Thank you all for your help. I appreciate the responses.
