I have the original install disk for ForeSight and Survey Link and I have the parallel port dongle for it. I am wanting to install just the Survey Link on my laptop for use in the field.

Question: Do I need the dongle just to run Survey Link?

Thanks,
James

Oh it's been a long time. But I believe the answer is yes. TDS liked using the dongle for all software installs and operations. But I could be wrong. Like I said, it's been a long time. Good luck.

That's what I was afraid of.

I knew I didn't have a parallel port, after posting I remembered that I don't have a serial port either. I tried a usb to serial adapter a couple of years ago and never got it working.

I guess I will just keep doing things the hard way.

Thanks,
James

Have you tried microsoft activesync? I haven't used the TDS download software in years, I usually just download a txt (or fbk) file from the data collector to my laptop.

I use activesync for the TSC2 which is 98% of what i do. I also have an old Topcon robot that I get out only when needed. It is run by a Ranger 200 with the serial port. For some unknown stupid, asinine #$%^#$@ reason, the contractor I work for thinks it is best to put the driveway pipes in now and clear the trees later. GPS doesn't work under trees.

I went thru this about 6 years ago when I first got this laptop and never got the laptop to talk to the Ranger. I'm slowly finding and remembering the same problems I had back then.

No usb on the Ranger,
No serial port on the laptop,
Keyspan usb to serial adapter doesn't work for some reason.

I can still download at my desktop using TFR. It still works just as good as it did 15 years ago. It's not very often, just sometimes would be a big help if I could download in the field.

Thanks,
James

Spectra Precision will exchange the parallel port hardware lock for a new USB dongle at no monetary charge other than the cost to ship it to them. They once (back when they were TDS)would let the dealer help in the process which was usually easier for the customer.

Now, you have to get a dealer to request an RMA to send your old one in. Once Spectra Precision has received your old lock, they will send you a new one at no charge, caveat the limitations of my sometimes less than stellar memory.

The fly in the ointment here potentially is that Survey Link is no longer supported to my knowledge and I do not know if you can get a key just for Survey Link.

You can also most any download through ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center if you can get the Ranger to link up through the serial cable (if it is a 200 with the COM ports in the top) or with the USB cable if it is an X-Series.
