I was using Carlson Civil Suite 2011 on AutoCAD 2006 and began having "unhadled exceptions" when using the C&G commands. Especially listing coordinates or other coordinate file commands. At first maybe once a week. It bacame more frequent as time went on. Finally it choked and I lost part of my toolbars and was never able to recover them. I found out we were good to Civil Suite 2012. Uninstalled 2011 and installed 2012. Carlson wouldn't open at all, only AutoCAD 2006. Tech support did their best to no avail. They finally determined that my antivirus software (avast) quarantined the needed exe file. It didn't show up in the virus chest. I deleted the exe file and replaced it with one I copied from another machine. Carlson came back. Antivirus software or not, the exe file was corrupt. First of all, has anyone seen this behavior before? I sure hope I don't have to quit using the C&G commands I've used for 20+ years.... Avast will not stay disabled now. Anyone having problems with Avast? What is a good free AV software?
Others here have posted about issues with Avast getting confused and taking out legitimate software. The other possibility is that the file got corrupted and Avast noticed the change and quarantined it. If your computer and particularly the hard drive have been around for a while, missing or corrupt files are usually a sign that the drive is about to go kaput.
Thanks for the reply. Will have to check with IT about the hard drive. I don't trust Avast since it won't stay disabled. I'm going to uninstall it and replace with something else.
The updated version of Avast will zap any file (command or other) that attempts to contact any file or program outside the program it is in and especially to retrieve data something from a website to input into the program without giving you an opportunity to save it or mark it as safe to keep.
They took away an important step and lost me as a user.
So what do you recommend as a replacement for avast?
I am not hardwired to anything anymore and use my wireless router and provider as the first line of defense.
Mostly they have to spoof the wireless router to even have a chance to see my computers.
All downloads go directly to a separate data drive that gets scrubbed frequently before transferring it to workspace.
Most email is routed from one email address to another and then gets forwarded to one of several email addys and gets scrubbed a few times in the process.
I use SuperAntiSpyware portable version installed on a thumb drive.
I still get tracking crap and other things that slow things down but the frequent scrubbing solves that.
Any persistent bug can be found about on a Google search with instruction on how it rid of it.
[sarcasm]then i just cross my fingers and have a beer and forget about it[/sarcasm]
Microsoft Security Essentials
It's free(built into 8) and works really well...About the only thing I recommend from Microsoft.

Lowcountry has it exactly right. Microsoft seems to be getting AV right. The people who know much more than I say MSS is the way to go whether you are paying or not. So much the better that it is free and maybe already on your system.

Bitdefender has some of the best reviews for free AV software.
I got a year free of McAfee with my new computer, but I was using Bitdefender on my older XP machine before that.
