Ok, I got a brother scanner/printer that will do up to 11x17.

The price was amazing. Something like $230.

Does anyone have any advice on software for scanning in 20 years of paper files?

Thanks,

Randy

Drop in the Brother CD and install the Multifunction Control Center, pick your language and it does most everything else.

The Control Center is all you will need to scan anything anyway you desire. It takes a little getting used to.

the CD will help setup your network and everything

There is a brother app on the GooglePlay store that will allow you to print from your smartphone

On the website, solutions there are other features available (never used any, more stuff than I need)

The automatic feed tray is a wonderful thing.

B-)

I expect you can get the Brother to do what you need to do, but since I plan (and have been planning, for several years now) to scan most of my paper files to PDF in order to get rid of a few file cabinets, I've researched scanners with automatic document feeders a few times. The reviews keep pointing to the Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 (and, before it came out, to its predecessor, the ScanSnap S1500) as the best ADF scanner on the market for small offices. It's not a multi-function machine, and it costs a bit over $400, but it gets so much high praise at feeding documents and turning them into PDFs that it seems to be worth the price for anyone with lots of documents to scan. (Like you, I have over 20 years worth to deal with.)

I also have the Brother All In One. I use InfoRetriever for my database.

http://www.irfanview.com/

Freeware that will actually BATCH process and name your scans.
Install all of the plug-ins, and take some time to setup the scanner defaults after doing some test scans. It will scan right to PDF for you.

Irfanview is an excellent program and absolutely don't overlook the plug-ins.

I have used it for working with a couple of proprietary opening tiff, jpeg and other image batch files and turning them into PDF files.

It opens and edits a multitude of different types of files.

:good:
