We still use Terramodel at our office and I find that for the work we do it is great. Has anyone moved on from Terramodel to something more up to date and been very happy they did? Or wished they could have stayed with TM?
Hey Jason,?ÿ
I still use terramodel to process linework and convert P-Codes because some of our guys still prefer to use our old number system instead of texting in descriptors. I primarily use Trimble Business Center and ACAD Civil 3d 2018 for my normal workflow. I personally think these are great once you get the hang of them.
Thanks,
Chris
Used Terramodel since it was Terracad from Plus3 software. Tried switching to TBC but didnt have time to learn it while trying to get anything done. Other guy in the office uses TBC but it still seems like there are a lot of things that are easier in Terramodel. We do 99% 3d modeling, mostly highway work. I intend to use it as long as I can buy a computer that will run it.?ÿ
I waited a long time for Trimble to put TerraModel into an updated software.?ÿ They finally did it with TBC.?ÿ They are working on it constantly and TBC is now much better than TerraModel.?ÿ Yes there is a learning curve but it is worth it.?ÿ You can pretty much do everything in TBC now.?ÿ I use word processors and spreadsheets, some photo shop and such but don't need any other cad/design/surveying software.?ÿ The only thing you would need other software for would be if the final deliverable needed to be formatted that way.
You can import TerraModel .pro files into TBC.?ÿ You can import many different files.
At some point Terramodel will be so far out of date you will be really handy capped.?ÿ Yes TerraModel has been a great program, I used it for 20 years.?ÿ The code is now inside of TBC, lives on and grows there.
The survey department at the company I work for was solely on Terramodel when I started here, I came up through Autocad, Land Desktop and now Civil 3D.?ÿ I've used Terramodel enough to be dangerous in it, there are some features that are nice but dealing with dynaviews when you're use to viewports, trying to select text that's below another object or working with hatches compared to Autocad based software is enough to give me a few more grey hairs in my beard.?ÿ The guys here that converted from Terramodel to Civil 3D love it now that they know how to use it. I'm pretty sure one of them wanted to bury me out back when I was assisting the company with the change over though (He now gripes when he has to work on an old job that's still in Terramodel and typically will convert it to Civil 3D if it's feasible).?ÿ
Thanks, what do you mean by: "The only thing you would need other software for would be if the final deliverable needed to be formatted that way."
by deliverable do you mean the actual look of the map (as in it doesn't make a good final product) or do you mean to format the file as .ai or .pro or .dwg or some other extension?
You can export dwg, dxf probably others.?ÿ If a client wants an autocad file or whatever you might need to have that software to make sure everything converted OK.?ÿ I don't do this very often or I just tell them they will need to clean it up from what I can give them.?ÿ I used to really struggle with TerraModel to get a client another type file.?ÿ TBC is much better.
I don't think most realize the progress that has been made the last 2-3 years with TBC.?ÿ It's much better than TerraModel and will do so many other things that TerraModel never did.
TBC can print good pdfs, I use Acrobat Pro as the printer.
I have 25 years worth of TerraModel files.?ÿ If I need to use one or get some info from one I import it into TBC.?ÿ I don't try to go back and use TerraModel.?ÿ I don't know if anything else will import a .pro file or not.
?ÿ
It just appears to me that if you are looking at more than just a few more years in this business you are going to need to move on from TerraModel.?ÿ For me TBC was the answer.
Are your Terramodel locks for sale? Do you have any Foresight or Foresight DXM locks you'd be willing to part with? Thanks.

I only have one.?ÿ I'll think about it.?ÿ It's not a recent version, 9.something (83 maybe).?ÿ I never use it anymore. Don't know if I'd ever need it.?ÿ I can import TM files into TBC.?ÿ Long enough time since use I would be very rusty at TM.?ÿ Send me an offer.
Not sure how to contact you except through this post. Terramodel changed the locks sometime around v9 or v10 so maybe the older locks won't work. What's your contact information?
