I have been using I-Backup for years to back up my data files and drawings. They have slowly gotten a lot slower, and it is hard to log into my account because sometimes I have to wait for a few minutes to log on. The file sharing routine says send links "via your email" but it always goes to MS Outlook, which I don't use. I checked my invoice from them today and they are charging me $99.95 per month for 200 gigs, but they are offering it for about 10 percent of that to new customers. I asked them about it, and they said I am stuck at $99.95 and cannot get a reduction. I am not happy with I-backup at all.

Do any of you have any good luck with any of the others? Are you finding Dropbox reliable for manually backing up files?

Suggestions would be appreciated. I have had it with I-backup.

Thanks

200GB would cost somewhere between $30 and $40 per month (depending on how much data you actually move around) with Jungle Disk using Amazon S3 servers.

I've been using Jungle Disk for some years now, and am very happy with the service.

Godaddy.com is only $2.24/month for 100GB.
I have my web hosting and email with them and they are great and cheap. This is the only cloud backup I have ever used, but I like the way it works. I have told it what files to backup daily and it does the rest. When I look at files in explorer, it has a small mark next to them after they have been backed up. I also will manually send so files and it goes about as fast as opening a web page.
Yes, $2.24 a month, looks good and can drive fast. Godaddy.com

I have a NetGear ReadyNAS Pro network attached storage box that I use to store all my files in the office. It's set up as Drive Z on my network. It's not as fast as the hard drive to access but it's not to bad. I have the small one 2 TB with two 1TB disks mirrored.

The unit is a computer and can be hooked through my network directly to the internet. It comes with software to backup into the cloud, a service called ReadyNAS Vault. There are other cloud backups you can use also. For $20 per month I have 50 GB. So I work directly off the NAS in the office and everything I've designated is automatically backed up into the cloud in the background. It took the thing a couple of weeks to make the first complete backup. From there it just automatically backs up any file that I change or create. I got most everything saved on there from the last twenty years. Probably most is junk but it's not worth the time to sort through it and erase the junk.

It also has a free software that allows me to connect to it from anywhere that I can get online from my laptop. I haven't got that going or really needed it but I'll do it one of these days.

So I have complete access to by files from anywhere and it's all backed up up to some data centers somewhere. The unit cost me about $700 and so far as worked perfect. There are cheaper ways to do it but this is business grade stuff.

I'm sure there are other similar services and hardware.

Note that not all cloud storage offers redundant backup. Carbonite, for example, stores only one copy of your data. In the event that they have a drive crash -- and it's happened -- they then reach into your computer to reupload the data, assuming it's still there. If you happened to erase a file or had your own drive crash at the same time, say bye-bye to your data.

Amazon S3 keeps at least one redundant copy of your data in a different area of the same data center. For an additional fee, you can specify that the redundant copy be kept at a geographically different data center.

I nosed around GoDaddy's information, but didn't find anything about redundant data storage. My guess is that they don't offer it, at least not for $2.24 a month.

Yes, you are right that it may not be redundant, but I would never trust any cloud storage completely. I use an in-house continuous backup thru the wireless network. The Godaddy is the redundant backup. Chances of losing computer, in-house backup and cloud all at the same time is slim. I just think that people are getting taken advantage of on some of the cloud storage sites. I have another cloud drive by having phone/internet/cable with Charter that is free. Just have not set it up yet. When you compare this to Frank paying $99, ouch! Change things up Frank and buy some fun surveying toys with that cash!
