A buddy of mine has ACAD 2011 and a version of eagle point that was purchased in 2010 on a laptop. EP was pushed to him. The lap top is getting old in age.. Can he move the eagle point software over to a new computer? If so any tips on doing it?

If that is full ACAD 11, I believe he has to contact Autodesk.

As to Eagle Point, he should have bought Carlson. I would have to make a list for the number of computers my Carlson 2004 has been upgraded to automatically on install.

I see Two other options:
1. Move the hard drive to another computer
2. Copy the partition containing Windows to another hard drive and stick it in another computer.

with either method windows would then insist on doing it's file check ... then after all that it will complain that it is "not genuine"... but it will still work fine but won't update.
to be "legal" you will need to give it a Retail Key, then you are good. (or probably the OEM key that goes with the motherboard on the new computer will work)

Gparted. I use it frequently for many things
partition management tool, free, open source... http://gparted.org/

Had our guru-for-hire have to do this for us twice on our EP stations. I don't take care of that end of it but I understand EP got pretty hard to deal with a couple of years ago. My partner that still uses EP uses it on his laptop now, so the gun-for-hire must've been successful.

Everyone LOVES the software they are using. AutoCAD 15 w/Softdesk 8 was THE choice, then Softdesk went away and LDD ruled. Terramodel was BEST. Eagle Point was BEST!! They all did a job.
Now, most of them are no more. But they are what you know how to use. They are what you are comfortable with. You will NOT give them up because there is "nothing better out there".
Has anyone ever sat back and figured out what that "comfort" is costing them? The man-hours spent jerry rigging a computer to operate with out dated software? The hours lost with slower software? The compatibility issues with client's software? (NO ONE using older software will agree with ANY of the previous questions. I guarantee that. I also guarantee that they are wrong.)
I gave a class at a seminar last month on an intro to Carlson Survey. Just the bare basics. Of course there was an Eagle Point "Groupie" there who was sure I was full of dung speaking of the advances in software. I heard him comment as he left the seminar, "Maybe I should have gotten Carlson."
My point is this; if you are using any product that requires DOS or a dongle, you are losing money hand over fist. People fear that learning curve for no good reason. It is not steep at all, even if you do it all alone. There are hands on training resources available to make the transition easier. No, they are generally not free, but any money spent on such training will be recouped in less than 2 months with increased speed, efficiency and the following profits. You will end up working faster, smarter and more profitable.
Start off with That Cad Girls training manuals. They are the best there is. Then follow up with a training session with you local guys. In Mississippi call Benchmark Engineering and Surveying in Brandon, MS (601-591-1077). We have people available to train you up on the Survey package abd the Civil package. We will do onsite set-up, configuration and training Or we can do small classes at various sites. Cost vary with distance traveled, over night stays involved or not number of seats configured or people trained.
I think Mississippi was one of the few areas left without any local training support centers, so we have jumped on that band wagon. And, yes, we will travel out of Mississippi to train. Naturally we look to make a small profit, so the farther we travel and the longer we are there the more expensive it becomes.
Get Jennifer's books, find the local trainers and UPDATE. ALL things considered, it may be less money than finding a computer with a 5 1/4" floppy drive or modifying a current computer.
