I thought this was funny: I had to migrate my Carlon Survey
to a new computer and was thinking of using a new layer system.
I thought I'd take a look at the "US National Cad Standard."
When I looked at the survey standards my first thought was:
this had to be coming from some architects. I was so
disappointed I went back to google and typed in:
"I hate the US National Cad Standard for surveyors." At the
top this came up:

Do You Hate the National CAD Standard?

Do you think it’s just too Architecture-y? And not geared enough toward Survey and Civil?

If so, now’s your opportunity to have a say and help make it better. I am a member of the V6 Steering Committee which oversees development of the National CAD Standard and I am also chair of the Survey/Civil Task Team. The Task Team has been charged with recommending additions and revisions to the NCS that make it more palatable to surveyors and engineers.

For a minute, I thought somebody was reading my mind. It turns out it was
written by ThatCad Girl who posts on here.

Oh well, carry on.

That is funny!

And it also stirs the pot.
Could surveyors help with the effort to include appropriate layer names for our work product?
Could we on this Board make some suggestions?
Do we need a committee to study this, or could we just make it happen?
I think it would be a worthwile effort.
It would certainly help with BIM projects.

I hate that damned thing. Do you really need 6 layers all for the same thing with cryptic titles?

I have to use it for topo/boundary projects but fortunately most of my work is pure boundary so I can use my own system with 1% of the layers and they have plain english names (imagine that).

National CAD Standard vs A/E/C Standard

You may want to look at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers/Department of Defense A/E/C CAD Standard The linked page certificate is outdated and pops up a warning. I have used earlier versions of the standard since about 1992 for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers survey projects.

The A/E/C CAD Standard was designed to be an expansion of the National CAD Standard. Because it was developed with public funds it is public domain. Since the Army Corps of Engineers has significant surveying mapping involvement I have found the standard usable. Corps of Engineers consultants are referred to the site and required to comply with these standards. The standards support both AutoCAD and MicroStation and include cells/blocks, linestyles, and template/seed files for use with the standard.

You must register to download files and will receive emails announcing updates of the standards.

LOL = lots of layers

I feel your pain, but when you have to work with huge layering overhead, layer filters make life a lot simpler. First try filtering to just used layers and then create a customized version to suit your needs.

There are already surveyors on the national cad standards committee, including one of my coworkers.

"That Cad Girl" gave an interesting presentation on CAD Standards at the recent NJ Conference. It was heavy on interactivity with the attendees....she didn't just stand there and talk.

I assume her class may be coming to a Conference near many of you in the future....it was it was a worthwhile session.

That CAD Girl was at the Conference in Illinois. I thought she was pretty good. I only sat in on one of her classes for about 1 1/2 hours. Wish I had more time for more of her classes.

Jennifer goes into the details that others skim over.
Y'all need to check out her website. She has reasonably priced classes from time to time and she now has some trainning manuals that sound really good. The one on configuring Carlson is more than worth the price.
If you were to get all of her booklets and the Carlson 2013 manual fron Cadapult.com, you would be WAY ahead of the game!! The answers to most of your questions or problems can be found in those publications.
