I have an ECW file from a local municipality that is over 4gb. It's 4" resolution color ortho-imagery. I've tried opening it with LizardTech GeoViewer and the file opens, but then as I try to pan and zoom, GeoViewer shuts down. I've got 8gb or RAM on this computer. The file is on a highspeed spinning drive. I opened the Task manager and watched the resources as I panned around. I never noticed it get above 9%. I'm not sure if the issue is my computer (I don't think so) or LizardTech's GeoViewer (5.5.0.3396). Anyone else run into this? I wish the creator of the file would have broken it up into a couple of more pieces. I'm able to open 2gb files without incident.
I typically use .sid files with Geoviewer and haven't had that problem but none of my files approach that size. Do have any other file format options? Can you parse it into smaller byte size tiles? LizardTech is pretty responsive in my experience. You might try shooting them an email.
I'd be curious what they built their program with.
LarryP once sent me a gi-normous tif image dvd.
None of my stuff could open it. About a year later I upgraded my development platform and out of curiosity I re-opened the project. It came right up.
Try Tatuk GIS Viewer. I have opened very large ECW files with it successfully.
And it is free!
Thanks! I'll check it out.
