Just purchased a new computer running windows 7. The problem is that my data collector and plotter use serial ports to connect. The computer has none, only usb ports. I got the adapters for the usb connections but can't seem to get the machine to see them. So I got the old machine back up figuring I would use it just for plotting and downloading, but now the dang mouse won't work on that one. All I did was carry it up and down the stairs. Worked fine before. I've tried three different types of mouses(?) and cannot get the machine to see them. Tried reinstalling the software with no help. Old computer is running xp pro.
Anybody able to help with either problem?
Thanks in advance.
Mike
I had something a little similar. USB port's quit seeing the cable that was attached so I have to use a thumb drive to move files back and forth from my Carlson Surveyor+ to my PC. Does your DC have a USB port?
Carl
No, its an older SDR33.
Sorry then. I'm not much help.
Hi Mike, on your first problem, have you installed the driver for your serial-to-USB adapter? If you did, try doing this, it worked for me;
1) Connect your serial-to-USB adapter to one of your USB ports. On your desktop, right-click on Computer and click Properties
2) Click Device Manager and click Ports (COM-LPT) then right-click on the Serial-USB Port and choose Update Driver Software
3) On the "How do you want to search for driver software" pop-up message, select "Browse my computer for driver software"
4) On the next window choose " Let me pick from list of device drivers on my computer"
5) Click on the appearing compatible device driver and click next
6) Check if your connection is now working
For your plotter and data collector with serial port, try attaching a Serial Bluetooth Adapter, this is a very convenient and cost-effective cable-free solution.
For your old XP pro laptop, try performing a System Restore (click Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore) and choose an earlier restore point where you think your laptop works fine.
Hope that helps!
Jef
Thanks for the help, I'll give a try.

About Half The COM/USB Adaptors
Do not work with a particular machine. Sometimes all that is needed is getting the right update from the manufacturer. Or try a different adaptor. Do not quit after the first failure.

Thanks Paul, I won't quit. Just trying to keep going for now. I should really be looking at upgrading everything but the work just isn't out there yet. Heck I think my sdr is still coal fired. Just got done with the second job so I plan to try jef221's solutions in the morning. I appreciate the responses.
About Half The COM/USB Adaptors
Last time I helped someone set up an adaptor we had to go online to get the latest device driver for the adaptor. It seems some can be sitting around for enough time for computers and OS to advance before the adaptor is purchased. So definitely check that out.

Well, no luck so far. Can't get the old one to restore to see the mouse.
I think the problem with the adapter might be that I'm trying to run it in virtual xp pro. For some reason it just doesn't seem to be able to find the port.
Thanks again for the help, I'll keep trying.

Mate i had the same issue, with Windows7 use the prolific USB to Serial drivers version 1.7. Install using the XP Mode and then plug in your Serial device (We had usb to serisl GR3's) and then let Windows install the driver and then goto start/run type in "devmgmt.msc" and expand Port and right click on prolific port and check driver version. It should be 2.1.**
Thats the only way i could get TopCon GPS Gr# to work with Windows7, Windows XP worked fine.
Good luck mate.

On the old machine, you might have to go into devices manager, pick the USB Controller and uninstall all the devices. THen restart the computer and let it reinstall the drivers with your mouse contacted.
