A friend that admittedly doesn't know much about computers asked me to take a look at something while at their house the other day. Firefox and Chrome had both slowed down drastically, and there were new ads in Gmail (banner) and Facebook (pop-up) that were completely suspicious looking. In other words, they definitely weren't the product of Google or Facebook's coding efforts.
I looked for the usual suspects, odd programs that they didn't install/downloaded and ran Malwarebytes. I just happened to notice that both programs were running the Norton toolbar (it's really small in Chrome). I deleted the toolbar from both programs and they started running fine and the ads disappeared!!!
It doesn't really surprise me, but people should be aware that Norton is separately monetizing a paid service (they had the paid version of Norton antivirus) by causing additional ads and slow downs.
I hate Norton.
:good:
Do they still have RNAV? (Remove Norton AntiVirus) Or can you uninstall directly?
I have hated Norton since my Win98 days.
NAV is a virus! It is impossible to remove without reformatting the HD its loaded on...
I learned to hate Norton a long time ago.
And I'm beginning to dislike Kaspersky as well - it's turning into a system hog.
AVG Free seems to be doing OK for me and it's not too much of a system hog.
there is one Norton that i do like...
I avoid using antivirus software on my PC by using my Apple devises for p0rn and gambling. Works like a charm 😀
I hate the software installs that attempt to install Norton or other "take your computer over" software at the same time.
When installing anything, always use custom install to insure that you will receive a window to select exactly what you want to install and ignore the bloatware that can come with.

Me too! Heading to the raccoon lodge. 😉
I Hate Norton+
I think I remember reading that a lot of the reason for MSE was because everyone else sucked so bad and used so much in terms of system resources the Microsoft just came up with their own.
It is part of Windows 7 and 8 by default.
While I agree Norton is itself a virus and hols similar feelings...
You have to give kudos to a business man who can sell a virus to millions by calling it 'anti-virus'...

Reminds me of the company (Boston Acoustics?) that played both sides of the radar gun/radar detector markets for years until someone wised up.
