Was wondering if anyone stills has instructions on how to assign user button to be HMS (convert decimal degrees to deg, min, sec), HMS+ (add deg, min, sec) and HMS- (subtract deg, min sec). Had this programmed at one time but somehow lost this function.
look @ the manual, but I believe it's [gold] (shift key) [assign] (the xeq key) then alpha-on (upper right toggle) then the letters HMS or whatever then toggle alpha-off and press the key you want to assign it to. (?)

That is correct.

On the HP41? i thought the key just toggled on or off. Are you thinking of the hp48?

With the HP Survey Pac you just execute the named routines on the module: XEQ, ALPHA, routine name (such as VERT), ALPHA. If you have another module, try SHIFT, CATALOG, 2 to view the routine names stored on the module.

You could be right Tom, these things begin to run together after all of these years...lol.

XEQ aplha HMS+ alpha and when I push ST key to assign it to the SST key it does not do anything
it used to be assigned there, but no it just states
XROM 00,00 when I pick the key after I try and assign it there
any help would be greatly aprpeciated as it as assigned there for about 26 years, not sure what happened

35 years and still fundamentally sound and effective.
Just think about all of the billions of dollars of work that has been done based on 41 calcs - amazing.
The 41 series is one of the greatest tools of all time.
Now put that dinosaur away and get some billable work done you old codgers.
I heard that the HP41 is all the rage with young surveyors in places like Brooklyn and Portland. They survey only out of 60s Broncos or FJ40s, and do their comps in the evening with the HP41 while working their way through a six-pack of PBR.
I still have my "original" HP-41c bought in 1979 (and it still works, I just checked), an HP-41cv (has an iffy zero button), and four (4) HP-41cx(s), one of which I use EVERY DAY, one backup, and 2 brand new ones still in the box (insurance).
When they go, I go!

I don't think you can assign anything to the SST key... Could be wrong, but I'd bet a smaill amount of money on it!

The 41 should be the rage with ALL surveyors! It has always been the best tool for the job...

AMEN Loyal! I said that too (When they go I go) but then I realized that they are going to outlast me. I'm pretty sure the kids will bury at least one of mine with me! I sure hope so, I can't function properly without one. My first is also circa 1979 - still works although I dropped a 60d nail on the screen years ago that shattered the clear window and makes it very difficult to read the display.

I spent many hours computing with a HP41CX and basic cogo card with no point storage capacity on a 1,500+ acre lake subdivision from 1983 till sometime in 1984.
With the correct Cogo module and other accessories it would do more and it had a very capable Cadd engine.
Also had a smart clock that the more times it was corrected, the better it kept time for those sunshots.
That ended when my cheap boss broke down and invested in a government surplus Apple II and Carlson Surveyor1 ($50 + $500)
While the HP41CX was an awesome machine, it was surpassed by the HP48GX with SMI DOT CVCE ver7 and a 2mb data storage card that would DC, F2F, Sun Shot and Draw while adding up the daily receipts.
