I have a contractor who'd like a drawing showing where he is above grade or on grade and where he is below grade for a dredge project. He is allowed to cut up to 0.5' over and get paid for it so we'd like to know where the areas are that he may have taken too much.

Does anyone know how to make the type of sketch he is requesting?

I don't have your exact setup, but I think a sketch showing cut/fill contours would serve you well. Take the design (or perhaps original) surface and the latest surface and do a two surface volume triangulation (trivol). Under volume report options have it write the tin difference and then run a contour from tin difference file (cntrTIN). Set the contour interval to whatever you think is appropriate and you'll have all the differences shown. If you need it colored, just hatch the area below the -0.5' contour.
Hope this helps . .
