Anybody know if there is a google earth app or something similar that I could load on a TSC3? Right know I create a kmz of the deed plots to aid the crews in their search for property corners. Now some of them use their phones and some carry the maps. I will have things on it such as calls for a tree or axles etc to aid them in reading the deeds. With the built in gps and the newer ones have internet connection it would be nice to be able to send them a kmz that they could put on the collection to use to search for corners. Although some of the areas we work in don't have cell coverage. Just curious if someone has been down this road before?
Hi
I have seen TSC3 being used with internal GPS to navigate to locate buried control points with lot and track linework also showing. As you suggest images should work also, I can't comment on Google Earth images. Our local council images have been better quality so I use those.
Can import aerial images into AutoCAD Civil 3D and correct them to the projection we are using and then export the image for use in SurvCE. Carlson xport can be used to do the same thing, but CAD is just as easy.
And have used background images surveying services and topo of complex sites, and often load control points and lot boundaries to ensure that we survey the correct site and full extents of the site. I create a base drawing before going to site with points boundary lines and control points, this can also be printed and taken along for reference.
I am waiting delivery of Scepter mobile pro S10, have found how setup the internal gps with survCE for rough positioning.
I would suggest dumping the KMZ into TBC and exporting it in another format, such as DXF (I will try this conversion when I get a chance, but give it a whirl on your own). You can link the DXF as the active map.
An alternative to Google Earth (if your crews will be using their smart phones), is Avenza PDF App.
You can create GeoPDF's of your custom maps and the crew can see their position on the maps. The maps and the App are stored on the device and can function without cell or internet service.
Very nice to be able to create maps in Esri ArcMap and use them on the smart phone.
Not sure if Autodesk products support GeoPDF's (probably not).
You can also download USGS quad maps that are georeferenced.
Thanks for that suggestion. on the pdf.
