I'm currently using firefox 3.0.8 and need to update. It's on a 5 year old laptop running XP sp3.

What version of firefox can I upgrade to that is known to be stable on an XP machine.

Any advice would be appreciated.

James

I don't know. The last Firefox update I did was from version 3.+.+ to 4.0 on my Windows 7 computer a couple of years or so ago. It messed up a bunch of my files which I have not been able to replace. During the download or rather at the end there was a message saying "These files were not compatable with this version and were removed". There were maybe 5 or 6 files listed and I couldn't make a list in time to see what all they were. One I know for certain had to do with an HP printer and caused the loss of the service cartridges function in the software and I could not get it back. Therfore, I did not upgrade Firefox on My XP computer and am still running the 3.+.+ version on it and went back to the version I had before the upgrade on the Windows 7 computer. Since then, I very rarely even use Firefox.

I had about the same problem when trying to upgrade about 6 months ago. After that attempt, firefox would not store my bookmarks unless I backed them up before closing it. Yesterday, I finally fixed that by starting a new profile and importing my bookmarks to the new profile.

My issue with the javascripts not working only messes with the advertisements so I will just live with it for a while.

Thanks,
James

I know what you mean but not on mine. There have been too many times that I needed to download a file from an email before leaving out in the morning only to find out something started updating while I was online. I disabled anything from updating on it's own.

Java crashed in June and was rebuilt early July and an update download was offered. It appears to be smooth now.

Firefox seems to become laden with memory issues the longer it is on for my machine, so I have to close it often.

After Monday's lightning event that knocked three sound cards, three Lan card controllers, two monitors, HDMI splitter, a LED Tv and a phone everything is getting a little upgrade to hopefully cover those and a few other issues.

I have all my automatic upgrades set to notify me if they are available and choose myself what to upgrade.

Don't trust some of what they want to put on my computers.

In a few months my XPs are going offline anyway as Microsoft is going to stop offering any updates including the necessary security updates.

😉

I finally updated to Firefox 24.0 yahoo edition.

Seems to be running good without any problems.

I just wish yahoo had not joined the upgrade crowd and screwed everything up.
