Okay, my buddy Chris purchased 3 Locus receivers. They collect data just fine. we have had a heck of a time trying to get them to download into a Windows 7 environment. No luck with that just yet, but I think I might be close to figuring that one out.
I have another good friend that works for a computer shop, and he scored us a couple of used XP laptops. I have installed the Locus processing software on it to download the data, and we will then use a thumb drive to transfer the data to the Windows 7 laptop to process in GNSS Solutions.
The problem I am having is that when I use the download software, it defaults to Com 3. The infared unit is plugged into the serial port which is Com 1. The drop down menu for the Com Port selection does not list Com 1 as an option. I have to go into Device Manager to renumber the Com 1 and the infared device to another Com port, let the computer update, and then renumber both to Com 1, and then restart the Download program.
I have to do this after each reboot. It is not too big of a problem, but I would like to fix the issue if possible. I have had this issue with two different XP laptops, and anticipate it on the third XP laptop.
I would appreciate any advice that you can provide. I have the biggest issue fixed, that being the ability to download the data from the Locus units.
Thanks,
Jimmy

An application is claiming COM1. You need to shut that application down before launching Solutions in order to have COM1 available. ActiveSync is a notorious candidate; you may have to manually shut it down prior to running Solutions, possibly even uninstall it.
I sort of ran into this issue with the TDS software. My problem was a failed COM port. The solution came in a USB to COM port adapter which could be assigned as COM1 or COM2 (the only two options in the TDS software).
Hope that makes sense and helps.
I have had real good luck with this serial adapter on my WIN7 64 bit laptop, my old USB adapter was a no go with WIN7 64 bit. Works way better than the USB adapter ever did even in XP, all my COM port problems seem to be solved using this adapter.

I use a Tripplite #U209-000-R on my Win7 laptop. Just remember to plug it into the same usb port whenever you use it.
