I am trying to get Carlson to code trees properly. I would like to code the tree something like OAK12 and have the tree plotted with a text line that says 12" Oak...now I can do this if I code each tree size separately (a different code for each tree size oak3 oak6 etc) seems like there should be an easier way though. anyone know how to accomplish this?
another thing I would like to do is scale the symbol to make the outer edge align with a dripline shot (the next shot) automatically. as always any help is appreciated.

Is this for F2F? In your DC or PC? I enter the codes in the field, but they don't coincide with the DC, but work fine on my F2F in the office. Hardwoods are the inch with a "D" added 12D, 24D, etc. If you want to customize the size and symbol, you're gonna have to play around with the F2F to get it where you want. The dripline thing is a whole nother ballgame (to me at least).

Good Luck.

A 6"Oak tree would be coded OAK/6. When run through F2F the tree symbol will be added along with text saying 6"Oak.
There is a training film on the Carlson website on how to size the symbols to the drip line. (I dont like doing that because all the drip lines that we have shot in the fiel have been rather irregular in shape and not symetrical to the symbol by any means.)

Conversely, you can make your codes:
12D
18D
24D
for: 12"(deciduous type trees) 18" 24" etc.
put a slash / after your 12D and type out the type of tree /oak, /maple etc.

for pine type trees use:
12P
18P
24P
plus /type of pine if you wish like: 12P/White Pine

of course you have to set up the F2F Codes - you'll need to read
the manual you to do that I think.

thanks everyone for your help. I have watched the videos etc and am confused on some items..the major problem I am having right now is that when I have the computer draw the point attributes, it draws the symbol and then draws another sybol attached to the point entity, so I have 2 symbols of every point. now granted when I turn the points off one goes away but still there has to be a way to draw just one symbol on a separate layer from my points.

Carlson 2013 introduced "Tree Surveys – New Field-to-Finish coding methods plus tree reports and tables."

Depending on your version of Carlson, you might be able to make use of this feature. Here is an excerpt from the on-line documentation:

>Tree Surveys
>Tree surveys can be coded simply by using general Field-to-Finish coding methods such as defining a code for a tree ("OAK") with a tree symbol and using the SZ special code for sizing the symbol. For tree survey specific features, go to the Tree Survey button on the main edit codes dialog. This function brings up a dialog with tree survey settings. The tree survey works with three attributes for each tree: trunk, drip and tag. Trunk is the diameter of the tree trunk. Drip is the radius of the tree canopy. Tag is an id for the tree for reporting.
>
>Important: The Tree Survey Settings apply to codes that are set to a Feature Type of Tree. To set the Feature Type, go to Edit Codes and then the General tab of the Edit Field Code Definition dialog.
>
>Here is an example with the following three points:
>Point# Northing Easting Description
>1 4994.73 4923.15 OAK 24 38 301
>2 5034.59 4881.40 PINE 18 24 302
>3 4987.32 4975.79 PINE 12 20 303
>

Hopefully this provides some insight.

Perhaps the functionality as displayed below (e.g. setting the main "symbol" to be a point with the second symbol being the tree) might work?
