I'm having a thinking problem today.

I have a simple problem I'm trying to solve.

Picture this, a road curving through a deep gulch. We need to lengthen the culvert and widen the road to allow a truck/trailer to make a tight curve.

I've solved the hinge point for the widening and it exists as a 3D polyline. I'd like to create a surface that goes +2% to the left (catching the existing roadway) and -1.5:1 to the right (catching the bottom of the gulch).

The problem I'm encountering is the fact that the 3D polyline is in a fill situation and I cannot get the software to go up at +2% until it catches the surface model. It always wants to go downward.

There is an option to use a roadway template along the 3D polyline. I cannot seem to trick it to fill upwards. Is there a code I can insert for the distance on a grade line to make it catch?

I've encountered this before and brought it to their attention, they must have addressed it by now.

Thanks, JRL

Finally after several hours on this issue, I know understand the tolerance on the force cut option. A graphical depiction in the help files would have saved me ALOT of time.

Hi Jeremy,

If you have Carlson 2012, check out the improvements that were made to Design Pad Template:

>Design Pad Template – Added options to force cut slopes in fill conditions and likewise to force fill slopes in cut conditions.

>The Force Cut option will try the cut slope to find a catch point even when the pad perimeter starts out in fill. This is possible when the existing ground is rising faster than the cut slope. Likewise the Force Fill option will try the fill slope to find a catch point when the pad starts out in cut.

I've not had a chance to experiment with the routine but it should produce what you desire (you'll probably want to specify the "Percent" option for the Slope Format rather than the Ration option I illustrated above.

The problem I'm having is getting it to do both sides of the hinge at the same time. Can I give you a call in the A.M.?

Thanks for the ideas. I was able to get further along, once I got over trying to do it a certain way. JRL
