I'm a bit confused. Recently came to Carlson Survey 2016 w/ Intellicad from C&G 8.
Reading the manual I'd thought drawing a 3d polyline where I wanted a breakline, then creating a surface file from the .crd, would give me the adjusted surface.
It doesn't - the triangulation goes right across the 3d poly lines, even when marked as "hard" breaks.
Adding break lines from the triangulation surface manager works but is very time consuming.
Is there something I've missed about using the 3d polyline tool? I'd really love to hear that there was a minor trick to making them work as breaklines that I just don't know yet...
Thanks for any help.
Well, I hadn't thought to look there...
I chose these settings and omitted a few shots with bad topo, found a bad 3d polyline vertice that was causing ~2,000 feet worth of unwanted contour lines aaaand, triangulation is still skipping right past my 3d poly's.
It seems like I've got to be getting closer, though..?
Got a response from Carlson tech support. Those folks are fantastic - I'm not in the habit of even bothering to ask software companies for help with the product but Carlson is just great. Anyway, here's the response:
"Tom,
While in Triangulate & Contour, go to the Selection tab and be sure that 3D Polylines are togged on, as well as the Point options. If that doesn't get you going, go to the Triangulate tab and be sure that these options are NOT toggled on:
-Interpolate Ridges & Valleys
-Interpolate Summits and Pits
-Minimize Flat Triangles
-Simplify Surface
If this doesn't get you going, please send me your drawing and a screen shot of all four tabs on the Triangulate & Contour dialog box. If you do send files, please go to Help>About Carlson and let me know what the Build is on the first line of text.
Thank you,
Brian Harris"
In my case, I had "3d polylines" on but I also had the interpolation, minimization and simplification processes turned on. I mean, hell, boys and their new toys, right? Well, turns out, those processes trump the 3d poly lines. So once I turned them off, fussed with a few other settings (and saved a new default settings file) and went through the routine as usual: success! Sure, I have to select a bunch of break lines - but they work! 880-something points of Sierra Foothills topo, rendered as requested.
That "simplify surface" check box is a total waste and should be taken out of the program. It's trash. It basically ignores everything but the points. Exclusion areas and breaklines simply go away. Do not do ANY of the check boxes that look like they will do things for you, like ALL of the "Interpolate....." snit. ALL of those will ruin your day. I believe they were intended to do great things, but I give them all a "No Go".
