On Wednesday and Thursday nights I can make time to play around on my new computer.
Having got the hardware and the GiS side sorted I've turned my efforts toward getting CAD working.
FreeCAD is by far the most popular CAD software for the Ubuntu version of Unix I use.
I comes with a number of 'workbench' add-ons. This includes reading dxf files, handling tins (meshes) and some surveying functions - points and landxml alignments.
But... The surveying function does not handle landxml surfaces. The dxf importer ignores tins and surfaces although it seems ok on linework. And the mesh functions wont handle Dxf
Therefore pulling the surface out of one my field surveys is problematic.
Last night I sorted a wee Awk routine to strip 3dfaces from a dxf into a format that builds a valid 3d mesh.
This is a BIG deal to me 🙂
Onwards...
Cool!
, Now that Windows is going to come out with 11 (and we're supposed to get new computers to accomodate the new operating system) I wish Carlson would come out with a Linux/Unix version.?ÿ I'd love to dump Windows.
I know it's been answered before, but why do we all keep jumping on the upgrade train??ÿ I don't know how much has really changed, in the Carlson world at least, since what, 2008 or so.?ÿ Sure, a few minor routines, but overall, not a lot.
C3D has obviously changed through the years, doing their best also to make things as proprietary as possible, not wanting to play well with others.
I'm no tech-head, computer geek, so windows has been fine, but not in the least looking forward to an upgrade/change there either
