Hi Gang:
Has anyone else seen this?:
We are having a problem where none of us in the survey department can edit more than one point at a time (in the points editor box on the right) without getting the spinning wheel of death that never goes away (effectively locking up our computers). We've let it go for as much as 2 hours, but it never stops, and doesn't allow anything else to happen while it is running. Usually, we can edit one point at a time. Sometimes we can edit multiple points, but it is very iffy.
Our IT has decided that it is a certain piece of add-on software that only survey has (since we are the only ones seeing this issues), and they want to take it off. Unfortunately, that would slow us down considerably.
If anyone else has seen this, I would greatly appreciate a response.
Thanks!
Our C3D crashes all the time for random reasons. What is the add on program you are using? Is there an update that you can do to it?
Oh yea that's a good one...many lost hours due to this issue. It wasn't consistent enough that I could repeat it on demand though. My first work around was using the Toolspace instead of the Edit Points Panorama. That works for editing multiple points. My other advice is to just save before editing points...every time. I want to say that there are plethora of hot fixes and updates out there that you are responsible for getting yourself. Autodesk won't notify you if there are any new ones available. needless to say I think I am currently up to date, working on a fairly good CPU with 8GB of RAM and I haven't had any problems that I can recall in the past 3 weeks.
We've sort of figured out some work arounds, but they aren't great. Mostly, editing one point at a time is the way to go. Saving before doing any point edits is a must. It just seems really weird. My guess is that it is an internal network/software issue that IT hasn't otherwise ran into yet, but I am not certain.
I don't want to say the software name, in order to not hurt any feelings. Suffice to say that I don't really believe it, and will be contacting the developer to see if they have seen this before.

What version are you running and what are the symptoms? Spinning wheel of Death doesn't get me very far.;-)
C3D 2011. The symptoms are that the little blueish spinning wait circle pops up, but never goes away, effectively locking up C3D. We call it the spinning wheel of death. I'm pretty sure you would get it if you'd ever seen it.
This problem sounds familiar, but I haven't seen it for quite a while.
A few things to check or try:
- Is this problem limited to a single computer, or all of the systems in your office?
- Can you uninstall the other program from one system, to see what happens?
- All current service packs installed?
- If your program has crashed more than once then your temp directory is likely full of junk files which can cause major problems. Delete everything possible from the directory.
- When the blue circle appears try a Ctrl-Alt-Delete and take a look at the Processes tab in the Task Manager. Does the Acad process show CPU activity? Does the activity show memory moving in and out of the working set, or does it stay the same?
- Try repairing your Civil 3d installation. If that doesn't work then maybe a full reinstall.
It sounds a lot like you may be hitting a known issue, which may have something to do with graphics hardware.
Check out this thread:
This is an issue I've never seen myself, but plenty of other people have.
Thanks Sinc! That sounds exactly like what we are seeing.
It does appear to be a video card/resolution issue. IT gave me a new computer (I was supposed to get one anyway) that is solid state and has a much better video card, and I couldn't make it do it anymore. Now to get the other guys in our department computers that work.
Which video card were you using before?
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
So it doesn't sound like the video card, then. I'm using a 9800 GT and I've never seen the issue.
It seems a few people have managed to get the problem to disappear somehow, but nobody seems sure exactly how. So it could be some setting going wrong, and if you can figure out the right thing to change, it might fix the problem. But it's still a mystery as to what setting might be going wrong.
It's starting to sound similar to the other problem in 2011, where people would start to have graphics issues after installing 2011 SP1. The solution there is to turn off graphics hardware acceleration, then turn it back on. Unfortunately, this other issue doesn't seem to be quite as simple.
