I have a topo (with a lot of shots) and the points have been individually rotated here and there to look good (to be parallel with the curbs, etc).

I did this topo in C3d 2009 (AECC_Points), and when I open it in C3d 2010, those points will disappear the next time I open the dwg unless I convert the points to Cogo Points with a point and label style.

But when I assign styles for the conversion, I lose my rotations, which will cause much re-work.

Any way to keep those individual point rotations?

Thanks,

Steve

in BONUS tools (or whatever it's called in your version)
there is a command EXPLODE ATTRIBUTES TO TEXT

That will "ruin" your point blocks, yet retain the text position.

We battle this issue at my company all the time. My advice is to wblock out the points in 2009, open the wblock and explode them, then convert your points in the main dwg. Then you can bring in the exploded text and it still looks nice, and you will still have functionality. We do this for topos, because we leave our spot elevations on and move them to be legible. However if these are important points, you are probably just stuck with cleaning them up again.

By the way, when the points dissapear upon reopening the drawing, they are still in there but the program doesn't recognize the objects. If you were to open another old drawing in the same window and refresh both, the points and contours, etc should reappear. The key is to find an older drawing to use that you know wont get converted to the new version.

Steve;

That is yet another argument in favor of labeling topo shots with actual text labels rather than using the elevation value in the point attribute. I have not kept up with the civil 3d thing completely but in LDD I made specific label styles for Topo_Hard (.01) and Topo_Soft (.1) then made point groups for both sets of points, set the appropriate label style current and insert matching point group, then immediately disassociate the labels from the points then I go around and align the labels for readability, don't forget to set the rotation of the labels to the rotation that works best for the majority of the labels prior to insertion. Another trick if you have a small number of discrete rotation values that cover most of the drawing then you can break your hard and soft point groups into sub groups to insert at the required rotation. Hope that this helps.

Randy

These pts are a new kind of entity called "Cogo Points", so now acad attributes to explode.

Thanks,

Steve

Thanks Dog and Randy,

Yes, using labels instead of Cogo Point elevation properties for the display would solve that problem.

I did that on one job that had a bunch of hard shots in a small area that I needed to show, and really had to adjust their placement just right to get them look good, but if I had to go back and adjust something, I did not like the fact that these labels were no longer associated wuth the point (i.e. this label is for what?).

Sinc on the C3d board suggested xrefing the 2009 dwg to 2010 dwg, which sounds like it might be the best way to work with these.

Thanks,

Steve
