I've done this in the past successfully with earlier versions, but I can't get Autocad Map 2011 to stop opening "drawing1" when starting a new session. I've changed the "STARTUP" variable to 1 but that doesn't make any difference.

Any ideas?

This is just like MS Word or Excel opening a new document when they fire up. Just open the .dwg file that you want and close drawing1.dwg with out saving. you could do that in either order.

Tom,

I do that already. There's no reason why drawing1 has to be opened in the first place or that I have to decline to save it and kill it. As I've said, I have fized this problem in past versions of Autocad, but I can't figure out why it's not working here.

Autocad should default to the "Open Drawing" dialog box when starting a new session instead of opening my DWT and naming it "drawing1".

Well, it was doing while set to "0", and I changed to to "1", and it still does it.

Right click on the desktop icon.

click "Properties"

in the TARGET field, are there any "switches" after the .exe file?

Try removing these. (everything past the .exe)

AFTER YOU'VE MADE A BACKUP COPY.

is what I turned into my template to start from. It comes up loaded with my linetypes and layer settings and text styles when I open my program.

When I do my first save I change the file name to my current project.

You could try the approach outlined in this post:

That might be the best option. I've never seen STARTUP = 1 fail, so I don't know what's going on.

In 2012, Autodesk introduced STARTUP = 2. Naturally, it's broken in Civil 3D 2012.

Glenn

I just tried the STARTVALUE = 1 (mine was set to 0 and always opened Drawing 1 also) and it worked for me.

I am running Autocad 2011 Map with Carlson 2011 Civil/Survey.

I understand what you are saying and if I'm starting a new drawing, I do the same thing because "drawing1" is from my template, just as you say. But if I want to work on an existing drawing, then when I close the session, I have to decline to save "drawing1". It also takes a few seconds longer to begin a session because it is opening up "drawing1". If I wanted to start a new drawing, I used to open my DWT template and then do a SAVEAS.

Yeah, I've seen that before, but wasn't quite sure about the second half of that, which is creating the script file. I may try that soon.

Matthew,

You and I are running the same exact platforms. I just don't get why STARTVALUE doesn't work.

Sorry, yes, STARTUP. I'm multitasking and had a momentary lapse.

I am not running the new Autocad, but in the older versions this is how you do it.

go into options and under the system tab in the general option section make sure the Startup: is set to Show Tradional Startup Dialog.

Like so

This is start up will just the dialog box and no drawing 1.
