I spent part of this afternoon trying to familiarize myself with AutoCad Civil 3D 2010 today. I’ve got a subsidence monitoring project that I’ve been working on for about 2 years now so I have some good data and proven batch files that I’ve processed in AutoCad Civil 3D Land Desktop Companion 2008.

Well things actually went fairly well with my self-education adventure; I managed to find the routines I was looking for. I processed a batch file and got good results with the least squares routine but the coordinate values are shifted a bit from my previous Cad2008 calculations!

I discovered by examining the Cad 2010 least squares report that the report contains the correct values I expected. Next I use the pull down points menu in Cad 2010 and list all points and they come up with the incorrect values but when I use the “Toolspace” and look at the points under “survey” they are the correct values!

I am presently looking at a pallet that has two tabs: “point editor” and “Survey point editor”, one tabs values are different than the other the "Survey Points Editor" has the values I consider to be correct.

No doubt this is a “head space and timing” issue on my part but I really don’t like the idea that the same drawing can have different values for the same point even if it is a result of my monkeying around!

US vs. international foot? Grid vs ground?

Hello Matt,

Thanks for checking in!

My dilemma is that I can list the points in the same drawing by two different means (“point editor” and “Survey point editor”) and see different values for the same point numbers. I believe one set is the non-adjusted values and the other the result of the least squares adjustment. I’ve had my nose in the manuals and tried the points updating to no avail. I’m sure it is something I’ve done but scary just the same that it can be done even if by a cad monkey.

It sounds like you are using a Survey Database...?

If so, the Survey Database has settings that are independent from the drawing settings. If you didn't set your units appropriately in both places, you may have a coordinate conversion issue going on when points are coming into the drawing from the Survey Database.

Civil 3D is actually bad software to just "jump in" and try to use... It SHOULD be like that, but it isn't. Instead, it really is a good idea to at least go through the tutorials first. Training helps immensely - you can spend hours looking for something that someone can show you in 10 seconds.

Not AutoCad Civil 3D 2010

Would it be better to use a hardware / software product other than C3D
example i use spectrum static post process to generate +-5 mm grid nad 83
coords GPS then go to RTK
and use C3D as a drafting tin model tool.

The GPS / robot maybe other softs "starnet" may be better done than autodesk solutions
I take a 1 sec rotbot to a 5 sec layout project

but in summary this whole field book and statistics i have never found much use for

Maybe the whole approach using C3D as mentioned is the wrong road.

That units that you speak of is what I was suggesting. I do not really see why it would give you the option to see the unadjusted coordinates after you have adjusted it. Just seems to me that would be dangerous. But if the DC said survey feet and the dwg is set up just feet, it would by default take them to be international feet and apply a conversion factor to them.
