Allegro CX Glitch Touchscreen

A few days ago my Allegro CX started acting up. The touchscreen became balky, and it looked like maybe something was continuously activating it. I removed the screen protector and ran a toothpick around the screen frame, though I couldn't see any foreign objects there. Today it quit responding to touch entirely, still flickering as though beyond activated. I was able to work via the keypad only, though the unit seemed kind of slow.

I'm running SurvCE v1.67, and the current job file has over 6000 points in it. That's a little bigger than I normally have; might the file size be causing any of this?

As an aside, while I've been able to navigate most screens with the keypad, there are a couple things I haven't been able to get to, like changing from the graphical view to the text view in sideshots.

I've had good luck using water with my Topcon FC2500. Sometimes just a bottle poured slowly over the edges of the screen is enough to float out the culprit. Once I even resorted to using the sprayer on the kitchen faucet.

Hi Jim,
I used a can of compressed air from my camera bag that I use on my lenses once in awhile. I try not to get to the point of blowing condensation onto the screen but you be surprised the amount of debris that builds up in that little void.

I do the same thing on my Trimble TSC2 controller as well

Bob

PS. Are you using the Juniper dock for downloading the CX and charging? I just got one last week and so far it seems to do both tasks just fine.

I needed a USB connection and this option sure beats buying a new collector.

Exit SurvCE and see if it's responsive poking around windows. That should help determine if it's your large job bogging things down or a problem with the touch screen. Unfortunately Juniper no longer supports the CX, but you could transfer your Carlson license to a new MX or a used CX. Let me know if I can be of further help.

I had to have the screen replaced on one of mine. Seems like Juniper charged me around $200, but it's been a long time, not positive.
BTW, I've still got my CX for backup, purchased a MX a few years ago.

With work backing up and deadlines looming, I had to make a quick decision. This morning I ordered a new-but-discontinued Carlson Surveyor+ and anticipate its arrival tomorrow. Once I get that up and running, I'll be able to perform exploratory surgery on the Allegro CX at my leisure to see if I can suss out -- and possibly repair -- the problem. The Surveyor+ is coming preloaded with SurvCE (which foreclosed the option of transfering and upgrading my existing license), so if I can resuscitate the CX I'll have a backup and can avoid the panic of the last few days should the Surveyor+ ever go down.

We use to have problems with a TDS Ranger 500 C. Put a some ice or ice water on the screen to get it back. On hot days carried a Ziploc bag of ice. Replaced it with Spectra Precision Ranger 3.

Did you have any luck repairing your CX Jim? I've got the problem you had, using keyboard for everything now, well almost - still haven't found an alternative to tapping the tick symbol.

I was preparing to say no, but I've been on vacation recently and thought I should recheck to see what it's doing. It's been disconnected from power for almost 3 weeks, so I plugged it into the charger just now and -- much to my surprise -- it seems to be working again. I'll have to run more tests to see if it's reliable or not, but needless to say I'm both surprised and pleased.

My optimism was misplaced. After a couple of hours I checked it again, and it's back to its old misbehavior.
