The military standards have long been adopted as national standards. Even National Geographic follows suit. This is simply Professional Surveyors disagreeing with Professional Cartographers. Very few surveyors are familiar with cartographic standards as is evidenced by many of the comments above. 😛

Why that's quite the assumption; they could all be aware of them and the majority don't give a rat's azz about them 😛
A Lot Of Surveyors Place The Frontage At The Bottom
Planning Boards like to have the lot front oriented so they can view it from the street.
I can live with that.

As a general rule, I follow the standards of north up or to the left (right reading). If the client has different standards then I will follow them.
In addition to rotating my North to be down, I like to list all my bearings in reference to the East star. Keeps em guessing.
Yeah. That's exactly the problem.
Surveyors have a problem being treated as "professionals", but not cartographers. I think it's because of the tight standards in the craft and the consistency of those standards for MANY years and the attention to detail that most cartographers employ.
Truth be told, surveyors deal with just as many details, but there's the consistency problem. (Look at the discussions all through this site.)
Plus several surveyors have stated that a map or plat is not a piece of art. I cannot tell you how many plats that I have seen that employ only one line width, no legends, strange symbols that are not defined, yet the plat depicts the attached description. That drives me crazy. I have run off people for turning out such a product.
A plat is not art? Take your uni-line plat and mine (MANY client's initial reaction has been, "Man I'm gonna take that home and frame it to hang in the den.), which one do you really think will lead to that second job? Repeat customers are the only way a business can survive. I have always believed that I should give the customer more than he/she expects. in any field, if your attitude is to give them just enough to get the job done, you need to change fields. Maybe that's why the company has kept me around for 36 years.
