I am saddened to report that Jim Tye, Oregon PLS 1104, of Bend, Oregon passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2012.

Our local surveying community has lost a great surveyor and a truly outstanding man. Jim was one of the most amiable guys I’ve ever know and a tenacious researcher when digging either for monuments out in the field or obscure documents and surveys in the darkest vaults and ledgers in the county. Jim was such a wealth of information and a delight to BS with. I received an email from our Clerk’s Office that sums up how folks ‘round here felt about Jim:

“… The County Clerk’s Office became quite familiar with Jim’s professional work and we only knew Jim to be warm and friendly during his visit to our office. Each and every time Jim walked through our doors we knew we were in for a wonderful visit…”

Jim grew up in Bend, and graduated from Bend High school in about 1965 (according to my cousin Lois, who went to high school with him). He served in Viet Nam in the field artillery. His three other brothers and one of his nephews are also licensed surveyors – The late Tom Tye, PLS, PE, who owned Compass Engineering in Portland, Bill Tye, PLS, PE, who owns Tye Engineering in Bend, and Mick Tye, PLS, owner of Sun Country Engineering and Surveying in Bend. Mick’s son, Rob, is also a PLS.

Jim’s graveside funeral will be at 11am on Thursday (August 23rd) at the Greenwood Cemetery in Bend.

Rest in Peace Jim.
