It is with deep regret we announce the passing of Harold Hayes on December 2, 2017. Mr. Hayes was the founder of Hayes Instrument Company. He had a significant impact on the industry for which many of us owe a debt of gratitude. Though no longer associated with the company, we express our appreciation for the pioneering work he did in our field and express our sincere condolences to all the Hayes family.

Several of us who are currently with Hayes Instrument Company knew Harold personally, having worked here when he was still involved in the business. His contribution to the electronic data collection aspect of surveying was recognized in POB in an article published in the October 2004 issue.

Jerry,

Thank you for posting. I had no idea of the depth of Mr. Hayes?ÿ involvement into developing the tools we have used in the past and many still use today.

James

I hate to hear about that, my prayers will be with his family.

He was truly a poineer in surveying, and the Hayes "Worry Free Lease".

I remember someone, may have been you, Jerry, telling me that when he went to the bank to finance the leases, the Banker thought he was nuts!

"you mean, turn the equipment in for no reason at all?"?ÿ

It apparently worked out good for the company, and for a lot of surveyors starting out with nothing.?ÿ Like me.?ÿ

May he rest in peace.

I have been at Hayes Instrument Company a little more than 19 years.?ÿ Mr. Hayes turned over the management of the company to his daughter Linda, and son-in-law, Eddie Clanton in 1992.?ÿ He was still very much involved in the business, however and the new management didn't do anything of importance without his input.?ÿ He was quite a character and his ideas and the prosecution of them is what made this company so successful that after the earthquake caused by Warner Allen selling Allen Precision Equipment in early 2007, Topcon came calling.?ÿ The sale of the company to Topcon ended his involvement.

One of his greatest contributions to the success of the company was the Worry Free Lease, which Terry mentioned above.?ÿ It still works...
