I've had my Brother (FAX-1860C) for about a year. I've had continual problems with it. All pertaining to the ink cartridges. I'm at wits end here. And it's going in the garbage.

Can anyone recommend a good replacement machine?

Thanks for any help

No. But, may I suggest you consider exhilarating methods to abuse said piece of junk prior to placing what definable parts are remaining in the dumpster.

Sledge, gunfire, fire, acid bath, metal shear, etc.

You may have gotten a lemon. I had a basic Brother printer for the home system for about 5 years and had no problems with it. I recently upgraded to a Brother MFC 6490CW and have had no problems so far. It prints, copies, and faxes. Prints and copies letter, legal, and ledger. I use it to print 11x17 plats.

Yeah, at least kick it (with your steel-toed boots on).

I'm very happy with my new Brother MFC-6490CW. It's a printer/fax/copy/scan machine and does ledger size, too. All for about $200!

My last printer/copy/fax was an Epson but it wouldn't print on three-hole-punched paper (by design)! Who thought of that idea???

When I got the MFC (I don't even want to tell you what I THOUGHT the initials stood for) I gave away my old HP fax/copy. I got the HP because it would take a distinctive ring tone to operate.

efax

Get a good multi-function (I like brother, but they are all pretty good and pretty cheap).

Its totally worth the monthly fee.

Thanks.
For $200 and getting a scanner and a ledger size print out just might tilt my prejudiced outlook of Brother to the other side.

I like mine a whole lot!! Ink is a hair pricey, but I guess that is the cost of doing business.

The MFC 6490 is on sale at OfficeMax.com right now for $200±

I have had the Brother MFC-6490CW for two years and its is going strong. It will do up to ledger (11x17).

One tip is to never turn it off as it will clean the jets as needed. Turning it off will tend to dry the ink out and it will cause spotty prints.

The smaller laser system is great if you only need up to legal size.

Personally I believe fax is yesterday's technology,

supported by fact that I rarely have clients who insist on fax as they prefer the electronic attachment appreciated by email.

My printer has a scanner, but I believe the trusty old Canon scanner that I have had for years and dragged around the state is ideal for copying hard copy documents for electronic transfer or data storage.

I like Wendell's clip -

Taking an 8 pound hammer to my old Gateway PC that was a constant source trouble was a very rewarding moment.

I've had good service from my Canon MX870; chosen for the duplex printing ability. Good printer, scans and faxes. Ink cost- that is another matter.

Personally I believe fax is yesterday's technology,

some great recommendations here, thanks.

In the spring I had urgent need to scan and PDF a couple inches of documents... I was up in San Diego right next door to a Staples. I walked over and bought an HP Officejet 4500 All-in-One Printer with document feeder for $80. (now selling for $70).
It served me very well for that task. Project done and delivered in record time.

Three weeks ago I needed to get some ink. $54!

Next time I get a new printer I will shop for INK first 😉

Personally I believe fax is yesterday's technology,

I gave up on ink and went with toner. Yes, the toner cartridges cost more than ink cartridges, but can you print 10,000 pages on $100 worth of ink? I paid $99 for my current color laser printer (Samsung CLP-315) and just bought two black toner cartridges for $45 (for the pair) and together they will each churn out 20,000 pages. A set of color cartridges would run another $50 or so but I've only used about 25% of the color cartridges included with the printer.

Personally I believe fax is yesterday's technology,

Nice article. For the record, my laser printer is smaller than my old inkjet printer. But apparently I lied about the number of pages I can print... turns out it is 1,500 per cartridge, but still, I can't ever imagine going back to an inkjet.

Got mine at OfficeMax on a sale for $99 and I see them pop up for that price again occasionally at various stores. They have a wireless version that is typically $50 more.

Personally I believe fax is yesterday's technology,

Much cheaper prices are available for the refilled cartridges. HP prices are unreal.

Just got back from Office Max.
I did buy the Brother MFC6490CW. It was on sale for $200. In addition they bought my old one for $50, so in reality I paid $150 for it. Thank god I didn't follow some of your suggestions on printer assassination. I really wanted to, but I had a couple of cold beverages and chilled.

I'm really pleased with the ledger size paper it can accommodate. I use that size for most of my maps.

Thanks Again.
