I belong to the local historical society and I was happy they were willing to have me pen a story about a local WWII veteran who participated in one of the most daring operations in the Pacific Theater. The subject, Rex Barber, was quoted as saying it was just another mission, another day in the humble manner typical of hardened combat veterans. A big plus for me in researching this subject was speaking with Rex's son. He and I joked that we belong to a rare demographic - Central Oregonians whose dad's were P-38 fighter pilots on Guadalcanal in 1943.

Here's to all the veterans out there. Thanks for your sacrifice.

That was very interesting. One of the great things about this site is the constant opportunity for all of us to learn a great deal that we didn't even realize we didn't know. Many times it is survey-related but non-survey threads, such as this one, add some distinct flavoring to the main course.
