Try this view of POB

Is there any reason in particular that this should be so? I find the new format virtually unreadable and this one at Beer Leg vastly better. I'd probably subtitle this site the "BeerLeg.com Daily Journal of Surveying" and do a slightly more proactive job of shunting P&R posts to P&R, but otherwise this will definitely do just fine.

In my opinion, that view of POB still doesn't compare to the format Wendell has established here. I'm not planning to split my surveying and non-surveying posts between two boards.

Boy, I sure remember weeks when there was virtually nothing but belly button lint posted on the POB Message Board.

Sorry, Bill. I've been looking at that site during beta for months now and I can't see how it is ever going to be as user-friendly as the old site or this one. As I said over there the other day, they've been working on it for months and Wendell put together this far superior message board in a few days with very few minor adjustments after launch. That Michael dude from Small World (the Founder and CEO) has some major 'splaining to do, like has he ever done this before.

MLB tried to shame me that I'm favoring a simple format and that the new RPLS is like a 767 compared to this Smart Car format over here. If all I want is to go to Starbuck's and get a cup of coffee, I don't need a 767, I'll take the Smart Car.

Now Kent, I'm sure that if the new POB board was seeking those kinds of posts, they would have established a "personal lint" category, accessible through a series of no less than three screens....

LOL! I think I once commented that the Tupperware Party format was something that I failed to see the appeal of but that it was possibly something that a GIS manager or a retired person (with lots of time to kill) might like. MLB is both!

The POB format is unfriendly and the more I look at it the more I think I will just completely stay away. This site is just so much superior in every way and most of all it is a surveyor's site for and by real surveyors.

With the depth of experience on this site who really needs archives? I don't think there is any issue that could be brought up that wouldn't get a thorough analysis on this site.

What Bill has recommended is, by far, the simplest way to make a quick check to see if anything potentially of interest has occurred recently. It is not as good, and will never be as good, as the old format. It may work well for those who stumble onto the site and only access on occasion. I do not see it becoming anything close to what we had before and what we have now here on Beer Leg.

There were some long educational posts on the old POB site that will never be repeated here or anywhere else. I certainly will not reproduce my posts on editing RINEX files. Mr. G will not be reproducing his posts for obvious reasons. The archives have great values.

I definitely think that there is a niche for a sort of combination surveyor's Wiki and Online Reference Handbook that is intended to be permanent and accessible. There is a remarkable amount of expertise on a variety of topics out there that is lacking mainly a medium to capture and publish it.

I'd be definitely willing to pay a yearly subscription fee for such a thing. Even just a minor topic like a cheat sheet for teqc would almost be worth the subscription fee in itself. Probably ideally it is connected with an active discussion forum such as this one, but in a format designed for page-by-page printing.

I have been doing that, but sometimes they show up in my sleep. 😉 If you see any offending posts, please feel free to report them to me (preferably with a URL) so I can investigate.

Thanks, Wendell. That wasn't a criticism of your herculean efforts BTW, more just a comment that the political jabber overrunning the category boundaries is part of what lowers the perceived quality of a surveyors' discussion forum. I really don't think that any poster would have a legitimate complaint about a post making political statements being summarily recategorized.

Uhhh...this is still Wendell's site isn't it? What does POB have to do with it, and why shouldn't we talk surveying here?

I agree with Kent. While POB has some good stuff, it also has a lot of junk. Using their archive can yield questionable results. A Wiki-Surveying site is the answer.

Near, real time discussions are another story. This site, just like the old POB, is a great place for people to work out problems and hear opinions, both the informed ones and the mis-informed ones.
