Anyone have a good recommendation for software that will transfer and convert 8mm video to DVD? I have a Sony Handycam 8mm Camcorder from the 1990's and I want to transfer the video tapes to DVD and also want to be able to edit them. Cut and splice, add text, etc.

I bought a TV tuner card from Woot a few years ago and it came with software that will let me do that. I copied some old VHS tapes for my father in law and they came out great. The software I used is called ATI Catalyst. I'm sure there are others out there that work just as fine. This program will probably work and it's free. I found it on download.com

> Found a nifty little device called a Dazzle. It has a bunch of jacks on one end and a USB on the other. We can hook up our old Camcorders and VCR to it, and it came with Pinnacle software (my son the budding film student turns his nose up at the software) but it works well and accomodates some basic edits. There are arguably some better freeware editing tools, but the jacks-2-USB hardware part has served us well. Once transferred to the PC, DVD burning is a snap even with something like Windows DVD maker, but also found the cheapware Convert-to-X much more stable.

I use Dazzle to digitize all my old vhs stuff, then I save em to an external drive.

:good:

I just plug the camera right into my Mac. Hit play and the software records it.

Be careful. Some of the video transfer software comes with malware, and even if you uncheck the boxes they still install it.

Bruce,

How do I know if it has Malware? How do I keep it from installing it, if it is going to do it, even if I tell it NOT to?

thanx,
Geezer

Well, that's the hard part. Even though you uncheck the boxes, buried in the fine print you have to sign is a statement that they will install various toolboxes, etc.

Sorry, I wish I knew how to avoid this crap.

I also have a 8mm Sony from the 90's and still use it. Windows 7 has video software with it that works fine. Just plug your Sony into either the livewire or the red, yellow and white audio-video cables and the software will come up. Just play with it and you can get some pretty nice videos.
