Some of you may never want it to rain and mess up you work schedule. Others of us with more than one interest are begging for rain.
We had far too much for about 24 straight months. Now the tap has been closed and we are lucky to get a heavy dew. The past few days we have had some percentage of rain in the forecast. Just enough to make you think it's possible again. Guess what. It rains. Somewhere. But, most likely not where you need it the most. For example, last evening their was a significant front moving in from the south and dumping a considerable amount of rain. It came within four miles of my house and within a mile and a half of my nearest cropland and.....POOF.....it was gone. Just like that.
What rain that has arrived has been incredibly spotty. What I call Houston afternoon rains. You can see it. It moves towards you. Then it disappears.
As spread out as my cropland happens to be the odds of getting a significant rain on all of it in Summer time is practically zero. For every field to get hit the rain would have to cover an area of about 8 miles by 8 miles. That would cover all of the places where I need it. My three other places are far enough away from that box to not matter.
But, I can almost guarantee there will be a significant amount of rain fall this evening between 6:00 and 7:30. The cemetery board that I serve on is holding its annual budget hearing tonight.................in the cemetery. The last time the meeting was held in the cemetery was long before I started serving. I think it was about 1975. As I am Secretary-Treasurer I will have a stack of papers and old records close at hand. Everyone attending has expressed the goal that we get rained out.
All week long we've been getting teased with a forecast of showers. I'd just as soon it not rain this time of year. Yeah, it's good for the flora but when the sun comes back out it quickly turns to what I call "tropical hot". 95 degrees at 95% humidity is uncomfortable to me.
I did wake up this morning to showers. I rolled over and went back to sleep. 😉

Most every day recently the weather is uncomfortable for me after 10:30 AM
In the Sacramento Valley it pretty much doesn't rain between May and October.?ÿ There might be a single June or July day in which we get a light sprinkle, but other than that it's dependably dry.?ÿ I get so used to it every year that when a storm finally arrives in October or November I find my self grumbling about it screwing up my field schedule.
Driving this afternoon.?ÿ Hit light sprinkles.?ÿ Just over one mile and nothing.?ÿ Then about three miles down the rode (for Bill93) hit a serious shower for the next five miles, then nothing ever again.
Still betting on the 6:00 to 7:30 time frame.

I thought y'all used a big stick that looks like a giant slingshot, sans surgical tubing, to make it rain or cure hives/boils depending on how it's used? ????
Dang it!?ÿ The surefire, garr-awn-teed method of getting rain failed me tonight.?ÿ Our outdoor meeting went on without one drop of moisture falling on us.

We've had several days of showers.?ÿ All around us.?ÿ We've been in some kind of donut hole.?ÿ It rains north, south, east and west of us but VERY little (less than 1/4 inch in two weeks) on us.?ÿ I told my wife that we haven't been paying the preacher enough (grin).?ÿ?ÿ

I've always referred to that phenomenon as a "surveyor's halo". It's raining all around you for 360 degrees and there's blue sky and hot sun right on top of you and the crew.
