This Bulleit Rye Whiskey is similar to scotch without the peaty flavor :-).
Philip Marlowe was a rye drinker, as I recall. I wonder whether Raymond Chandler ever mentioned specific brands and, if so, whether any are still being made.
I just finished another Greene novel, the Honorary Consul. I have a Chandler novel next on my stack so I will pay attention to any mention of brands.
Old Overholt Rye has been around for a 100 years or so, and is pretty easy to find.
Between that and Rittenhouse Rye, I developed a bit of a taste for Rye back in late 60s & early 70s.
High West Double Rye (out of Utah of all places), is our Rye of choice down at the saloon these days, but a bottle lasts a LONG TIME compared to my youth.

Old Overholt seems to be the definitive rye.
I like the smooth but spicy flavor of the stuff. It is 90 proof though so consumption is limited.

Have you ever tried the WILD TURKEY RYE?
I don't see it very often (don't even know if they still make it), but it could make you 10 foot tall and bullet-proof in a hurry...

Some writer fictionalized that as "Old Overalls". May have been Chandler.

Rye whiskey is a drink to have at the end one of those days or periods that you don't want to repeat very often.

I still have (part of) a bottle of absinthe that I bought in Amsterdam about 10 years ago. It's not the "really good stuff," you have to go to Prague for that!

Well, I've had that bottle for nearly 10 years, and it appears to still be about 75% FULL. So I guess I'm not too far gone (yet).

From "The Little Sister" chapter 7.
Old Forester is a brand of Bourbon.
I will see what he comes up with next. The action takes place in the fictional L.A. Basin town of Bay City.
