I realize I could probably just Google it but that is a bit boring.

Why is it that in a time that predates me a Private Investigator was referred to as a Private Dick??ÿ

Merriam-Webster claims it comes from the word "detective" by shortening and alteration

Probably the other way around.

Some sources say the term was used in the 1800's and Tracy originated in 1931.
