this drags on......

the first time he showed up unshaven- the Judge should have summoned the 5 MP and a medic to the court room, broke out the field barber kit, shaved him and got on with the trial.

Odd that he did not have the need to meet his "religious obligations" prior to this point in his military career. Grandstanding and playing the court to the fullest. Somebody needs to snatch a knot in his shorts and remind him that, for now, he is an officer in the U. S. Army and will conduct himself as such. :pissed:

I think it is stupid that the man cannot wear a beard, or that the judge would hold up the trial because of the beard, or that they would shave him by force.

Course I wear a beard too.

All military members must be clean shaven to allow for a good seal on gas masks and the like. There are very few exceptions. This rule was in place long before this guy signed on the dotted line, agreeing to follow the rules for his contract period. Military service is not just a job, it is a highly disciplined fighting force with strict adherence to regulations for good reason.

One would think they might want the beard shaved because they believe it will have an effect on any eyewitness identification that might arise during the trial.

But apparently, that issue has not come up (He was clean shaven at the time of the shootings).

If this is all about "decorum" in the court room, it's a waste of everyone's time. What are they going to do.....tack on another 30 days because he won't shave?

Get on with the trial already!!

I think that there are political motives for losing the beard. They are trying a US military officer, not a muslim extremist. Religion is not in the picture and the beard is a representation of that. If you have spent any time in a military town, you can tell immediately if someone is a civilian or not simply by their haircut and appearance. His hairstyle is not his to decide and military courts have far more leeway than their civilian counterparts. I am very surprised it has taken this long.

When I was in, we regularly had sailors confined and on a bread and water diet for relatively minor offenses. Discipline is very important.

Could do what my Brother and I did years ago. Had a stinking Ram Goat that pissed in his beard. He was part of the herd that the hired hand kept around to milk, needed it for his diet. We roped that Ram and gave him a shave, ropes stunk until the day they were replaced and the goat didn't smell any better, but when you had a rope in your hand, he wasn't around. Could do the same with this clown, probably easier to rope than goats, he has no place to run.

Then force shave him if necessary.

The man killed 13 people and wounded another 29. It was the worst shooting ever at a military base.

I think the time to worry about discipline has long passed.

The ones who should also be in court are the ones who supported a policy to treat Muslims with kid gloves. If he had been white, there would not been a shooting because he would have been removed from the service. An act of terror waiting to happen and apparently the threat had been noted but ignored, those who were afraid of him transferred their problem to someone else. All involved or supported that transfer are more guilty than the trigger man, hes should have been locked up until discharge.
