My daughter asked me the other day "How and where did Thomas Jefferson find the time around all his other endeavors to become the father of the PLSS?" Can any of you suggest some good reference materials? She is an LS & PE by the way.
I probably should have been able to give her some good references but I'm drawing a blank right now.

They first experimented with it in western New York. Jamestown NY is an example. Did they happen at the same time? The numbering pattern changed when they got to Ohio.

Chapter 8 of Measuring America (Democratic Decimals) gives a pretty good explanation as to Jefferson's involvement.

She might read Wikipedia on The Land Ordinance of 1785. For a quick review that talks about that. Jefferson was heavily involved with proposing the standardization of measures and weights, and the laying out of the lands.
Congratulations on raising a PE/PLS with your own two hands. That's awesome. (Always take credit for the successes of your kids and only blame them for the failures. That's your right as a parent.);-)
