On my street (just outside of Baltimore City, MD), a few years ago, some folks were renting houses for $1200 a month. Small duplex with one bath, two bedrooms, basement. About 960 square feet of living space.

That seemed excessive to me for rent on this street. I bought my house about 11 years ago and my mortgage is about half of what the rental rate was. I don't know what they are going for at the present time though.

They could have colored that map red and blue.

In the case of Arkansas, shouldn't that be "two-room cabin". The whole idea of devoting an entire room to just a bed would be foreign there when you can roll up a bedroll, stow it away, and have a regular parlor during the day.

The idea of a one-size-fits-all cost of rent for Texas really doesn't make any sense when the variations are so huge. There are some little towns in the left-behind parts of the State where you could probably BUY a house for what it would cost to rent one for a few months in the urban areas where demand is great.

that's about exactly the size of my house. i could easily get upwards of 3K a month for it now. which... as soon as this kid gets a few more years of school in her...

The median cost of a 2 bedroom apartment in NJ is $1420/month
which means you need about $47,000/year to live here according to stats I read yesterday.
I my condo $1200/month could get you about 600 sq ft per month and a 1 bedroom
And buying a home is even more costly
The median house price in my town is now at $461,000

After income taxes and other subtractions from the paycheck and the gawdawful property tax bill for a $461,000 house, I would prefer moving into a nearby better quality motel/hotel and spending less money, by far.
