Heading out tomorrow for Steamboat Springs, Co. for daughter #2 wedding. I see part of I-70 west of KC is toll. Whats their procedure if you dont have the sticker on the windshield and is it worth it to stop in Lawrence and get one? ?ÿI assume you get a ticket of some kind when you get on and pay when you get off? ?ÿThe ones that used to be around here you had to throw money in or you didnt get through regardless of whether you were getting off or not. That was before the automated stuff.?ÿ

My travels back home, in Kansas, I always just grab the ticket and pay when I exit. I'm not aware of any changes to the system if there have been any in the last couple years.
I very rarely travel any part of the Kansas Turnpike as it goes from KC to Lawrence to Topeka thens angles southwest via Emporia to Wichita and then south toward the Oklahoma line near South Haven. ?ÿYou would only be on for the fairly short trip from KC to Topeka, then continue on I-70 for many hours. ?ÿGrab a ticket when you get on and pay the toll collector when you get off at Topeka. ?ÿYou should be able to Google the current rates. ?ÿYou could get on K-10 in KC to get to the west side of Lawrence but Highway 40 from there to Topeka will make you think you are back in Kentucky. ?ÿI would use the turnpike if in a hurry.

Twice I have tried to maintain my status as "cheap bastard" and found ways around the KTA's toll routes.?ÿ By design (I'm positive) I was funneled into some of the darkest and most nefarious parts of urban deathscapes worthy of Snake Pliskin's surroundings in Escape from New York City.?ÿ I'm sure all those felonious chaps at every stoplight were hired by the Kansas Turnpike Authority to razz occupants of cars with out-of-state plates...just to make sure?ÿthey use the toll road the next chance they get.
Pay the lousy 4 or 5 bucks and stay on the toll roads.

I think theres a toll for the new bridge between Louisville and Jeffersonville, In. where they just take a picture of your license and send you a bill. I got a bill showing the car my daughter drove across there for work because it was still in my name.?ÿ
Had a couple bad experiences with toll booths. The West Ky Parkway was a toll road when I was in high school. The FFA advisor took a carload of us to the State Fair a few times. On one trip something happened to his window and it wouldnt roll down. So when we came to a toll booth he handed the change to the kid in the back seat to throw it in the coin chute. He reared back and threw it so hard it bounced off the machine and under the car. Then we had to scramble around and try to gather it up. ?ÿThat kid is now the president of Cal-Poly. ?ÿ
Another time I was in Atlanta and headed north on a toll road. Traffic was bad, and the woman in front of me pulled up to the booth, then stuck her head out and said she didnt have change. I told her to pull up and I got close enough to throw in the money. We both shot through and the gate just missed the back of my truck. Figured Id get a ticket in the mail for that one but never did.?ÿ
The toll KS Turnpike is nice and not too expense if you're running a "4-Wheeler" and it stops somewhere around Topeka. Pack your lead foot, once you get past Topeka it's wide open and Momma's in the Mini Vans set the cruze on 85. Speed limit is 80 and lots of folks hold steady at 90.
A beautiful alternative to I-70 would be Route 56/50...But that may be too South for your final destination. Stop at Mount Sunflower on your way back. Hays is also a cool town to visit. Safe Travels

It's still the same. All automated, unlike Okkie land where they expect every driver to carry up to 60 dollars in change, and if you run out of change you have to sign a promissory note -?ÿ KS Turnpike will gladly accept all forms of payment.

It seemed alright. Took 44 out of Missouri into Oklahoma and it worked pretty well. I do know if you miss your exit, on some stretches, you'll be driving awhile before you can turn around.?ÿ

I have taken the Indian Tollway multiple times. It's not a bad drive and the speed limit is 80mph (I think).
It was 65mph on the stretch that Oklahoma State Police pulled me over.?ÿ
Landed in Colby, Ks after 12 hours, 830 miles, and 4 stops. Speed limit has been mostly 75 since Topeka, havent seen any 80. Quite a few troopers out. Picking up 2 daughters at Denver airport midday. Oldest and husband had first leg flight from Charlotte to Atlanta, but they drove that last night so they could hopefully get back to there Monday. May end up riding back with us.?ÿ
Not much in Colby, but there is a nice new place called the City Limts Bar & Grill that grills a vice steak and mixes a potent marguerita.?ÿ

The Wal Martz?ÿ in Goodland (35 miles west) is an easier on/off from I-70. ??ÿ
