What can go wrong in 2021 will go wrong. (sigh)
2021 - gridlock around an EV charging station.
Not if it??s in your garage. ?????ÿ
Orlando news this morning shows pics of gas stations already closed because of no gas. ???? ?ÿ
A mere rumor of a shortage in any commodity will create a real shortage as future purchases are moved to immediate.
When there is a real shortage, this effect makes it faster and more widespread. I'll bet there are fuel shortages in areas not served by that pipeline, nor adjacent, where its shutdown should create a temporary surplus for the other places.
Meanwhile, in Houston we have a huge surplus.?ÿ
The fact that the command, control, and communication system of such a large pipeline system is accessible from the open interwebs scares me.?ÿ You would think that after all of the ransomware attacks on hospital systems over the past few years that major infrastructure companies would have taken the steps needed to combat such an attack.?ÿ ?ÿThere are security softwares out there that were designed to combat just this sort of issue.?ÿ (Sentinel One for example)?ÿ I know that a lot of the larger surveying and engineering companies have been going to much stricter security.?ÿ That has been a huge pain point lately with TBC.?ÿ?ÿ
Panic scarcity is a legitimate thing in this country now. The avenue of stupid went from person to person to an instant worldwide broadcast process which will eventually cause some immeasurable disaster in my lifetime.
Far beyond toilet paper scarcity.
Take for example that ship getting stuck in the Suez.
Less than 10% of global trade is transited there yet the potential of scarcity led the charge for fear and Bullsh!t.
We need to dial back the noise floor of the social media channels.
Easy fix is get a better IT department.?ÿ It's not rocket science.
It usually boils down to lack of willingness to spend adequately and hiring less than competent people.
Remember.?ÿ IT directors and staff are never licensed.
Something to think about.... ????
Our computer systems never had security as a design parameter. Security is now a frantic series of plugging holes.
A necessary, although not perfect, step to avoid eventual technological collapse is to go a computer architecture that keeps programs and data in separate memories (Harvard Architecture). The shared memory (Von Neuman) architecture that Windows and Linux run on offers too many opportunities for malware exploitation.
Currently, software updates itself automatically or when the vendor signals it. Our browsers receive data and then execute parts of it as scripts, building the web page on your own computer, and writing files. Documents can have executable macros.
There need to be checks and manual approval for each instance where downloaded information is to become sotware or update software. This would disallow many features now in use.
All of those current techniques and more are efficient, effective, and convenient. But they are all about as safe as leaving the key in the front door lock when you go out so a repairman can get in. So can others.
The software vendors keep applying fixes, but the situation will continue to degrade until hardware and operating systems are redesigned from the ground up with security being prioritized over convenience.

I wonder what would happen if all electronic media was shut down for one month. ?????ÿ

At this point?
?ÿ
The world would end.

I don't blame IT, I blame the CEO, CFO, and Accounting for being too guddamn stupid to not have invested more in cyber security. The "Lowest Bid" stuff don't float in an instance such this creating continental chaos. ?????ÿ

True. But to participate in the process esp at the IT Director position you're part of the problem by not doing best practices too. FIRED!
The governor of NC declared a state of emergency that does several things including policing price gouging and relaxing rules on tanker trucks.
Locally, we had a similar attack that shut down the community college last year (?) and the city of Charlotte was down for weeks because of a ransom attack.
I noticed that the perps issued an apology this morning and vowed to be more selective in the future. I wonder, what prompted that?

You couldn't buy anything at most stores, since the prices have to be looked up by bar code from the company web site.
If some store manager figures out how to do it 1960-style, you couldn't do any financial transactions other than the pocket cash you have.
There would be riots, door-to-door armed looting of any food.?ÿ Probably burning places that didn't yield any.
People would use their last gasoline to drive to some place to camp, and raid fields of corn or whatever for something to eat.
Then it would go downhill from there.
It so happens I was at our monthly Rural Water District Meeting last night and approving our insurance coverage for the next year.?ÿ One item that came up was what would happen if the power company that serves the wholesale water plant that supplies water to us and about a dozen other entities was crippled by some sort of terrorism.?ÿ No electricity equals no new water being produced and no way to pump it to all of us.
I went to Mr. car wash, a local chain, this morning and the gas stations along I-4 have all kinds of gas while the neighborhood 7-11??s, etc have only regular or zilch.?ÿ
One station nearby had lines already and this just became National last evening. I thought the coconut telegraph was fast. ?????ÿ
(I??m good unless Amazon runs out!)
Probably a covert drone attack in a place to be determined in the future news..... ?????ÿ
Planning on running the generators on Wild Turkey or Biccardi 161? ?????ÿ
