I have a buddy, that says that he does not need a license to drive. He owns the roads, bought and paid for, with his gas tax money. He is not driving for hire, commercially.
Says he has a right to travel, in the Good 'ole USA, and it is his civil right.
Anyway, the local sheriff did not agree. So, now he is looking for a way to travel, without a license, and I told him get a moped, less than 50 cc. Somebody else said no, you still need the drivers license. I don't know.
(Well, that's what the drunks drive!)
Then, another fellow suggested a big tractor, with a turbo diesel, and propane injector, and a trailer with a cover, and hay for his family!
Anyway, how do you travel, without a license, in this country?
Any ideas?
Thanks!

In Virginia you do not need a license to drive one of those small thingies, BUT you can not drive one if you have lost your license. In other words you can't try to beat the system.
Walk... (of course you probably NEED some kind of "ID" in some places).

On a horse. Well, but you need to have the proper "papers" to cross state lines.
You will have to hoof-it
The only other way is to pay a lawyer and the courts mass amounts of dollars to reinstate you plus an additional dollars to the Department of Public Safety to lay off stopping you and adding to your pains until you have met all the conditions of your punishment.
He can drive like this guy.
I had a friend who flew small airplanes for years without the proper FAA certificates. He soloed but just never bothered to get his Private Pilot certificate.
He got caught when he had an engine failure and forced landing with a passenger. He told me the FAA inspector, "you did a good job since no one was hurt. Now go get your ticket." So he flew with an Instructor for the required number of hours covering all of the required training, took the Practical Test and got the certificate.
Another got Instrument clearances for years with no Instrument Rating. He owned a Cessna 205 (not many around). When they finally caught him he was in his 60s so he surrendered his certificates and sold the airplane.
Driving motor vehicles on public roads is considered a privilege. Good luck bucking that but your buddy can certainly try.
bicycle
My preferred method.
Have a great weekend! B-)
When I was a 14 year old kid, I could legally drive a farm tractor with an 8 row tool bar taking up both lanes thru downtown Seagraves Tx but I couldn't legally drive a car. I hear they are trying to change the law on the farm tractor now.

How about something like this?
The answer is incredibly simple and obvious. You hire a chaufeur.
I know a fellow who had one too many drunk driving arrests but had a job where he had to travel every day. He hired a fellow to drive him everywhere he needed to go. Great job. Not much pay, but, enough. Drive for an hour or so, kill time for several hours doing whatever pleases you, then drive for an hour or so back home. My friend owned the car and paid all expenses, of course. This went on for about three years or so, until he was able to get back his drivers license.
Speaking for myself, since I have no car and have had no license in about 7 years, I just hoof it. A tank full of gas at today's prices buys me a brand new pair of New Balance shoes. They last me several years.
So what do I need with a license to drive?
The cost today is way too mcuh more than the worth - IMHO.

"Get on your bikes and ride"
Yes, that may fit even better. Both great songs and a great band.

Dave,
I disagree. I'm taking the local "Citizens Academy" and we just had the Police/Sheriff portion of the class. Our local Police Chief stated as much: "you need to have a valid ID (not a VA DL), and it can't go over 35mph, and you have to wear a helmet within town limits. People in town that have gotten DUI's drive them" I think it's a town by town, city by city, county by county, jurisdictional thing. Just like zoning and subdivision ordinances, don't lump everything into one catch all category.
