I find that of interest. Shot from the air? Airplane or helicopter it would have been one hell of a shot. Not sure i would want to face off with someone capable of that feat.

Helicopter hog hunting is getting pretty popular. There was a crash several months ago but I don't remember the details. There should be plenty of of videos on youtube.

Just a couple points:

First - Shooting coyotes on public and private land is legal year round in Oregon. They can be killed for sport, for fur, and for predator management.
There is no regulated hunting season for coyotes because they are considered varmints (defined as troublesome wild animals).
The wildlife refuge is a different matter when it comes to hunting. The ranchers grazing their cattle on the refuge have additional rights to protect their property than the general public does when simply hunting.

Second - This is a big one. It is not "their" land. It is USA public land, where the BLM has been delegated the job of managing certain aspects of land use to ensure the resources are available for all future generations to utilize.
Because there are certain public lands (through consensus of the public), determined to be particularly unique and special, legislation has been passed giving these areas special designations such as primitive areas, wilderness areas, national parks, national grasslands, and national monuments. There is a very distinct difference between legislation, executive orders, and policy regulations. The public is provided the opportunity to participate in the decision making process when it comes to legislation. The trouble begins when the Federal Gov. starts managing ALL public lands as if they held those special designations. This is what is happening. In the name of the environment, the majority of the country appears to support this, even though the BLM has not gone through the lawful steps to achieve those designations. To me it is short cutting the democratic system. I have strayed from the point a little, but it's NOT "their" land.

EDIT - I see now that you meant that the Hammonds were killing Coyotes on "their" own land. Sorry.

You might note that the name of the facility is the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. There are hunting restrictions within Refuges.

Malheur National Wildlife Refuge Hunting brochure

If you check the Federal Code Section 32.22 you will find that there is a five month season on coyotes at Malheur.

Dwight and Steve Hammond are not the only grazing permittees on the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. They behaved poorly and were booted.

The circumstances would appear to be highly suspicious. Perhaps thousands of protesters will now arrive with placards reading "rancher lives matter" or some such as happens around the country in recent times when a police-involved smackdown occurs. At least it will give the national news somewhere to be other than Iowa and New Hampshire for a day.

Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley released a statement Tuesday evening:"I am pleased that the FBI has listened to the concerns of the local community and responded to the illegal activity occurring in Harney County by outside extremists."

Disgusting IMO. I have no idea how the events unfolded, but to say you were pleased..

Surely a bus will soon arrive with Al Sharpton and his entourage. He seems to show up at every other event involving the authorities versus minorities.

I remember this sad incident that occurred awhile back. Police are not trained to respond to non-threatening people with guns.
Rancher shot by police trying to protect bull

One time when they were young, my little brother and a friend were shooting squirrels on a neighbors ranch. A police officer of some sort drove by and slammed on the brakes when he saw them hunting squirrels. He demanded that they throw their guns down and put their hands in the air. Being fond of their squirrel guns, they refused and asked why the police officer was yelling at them. The officer put his hand on his sidearm and demanded again that they throw down their guns.

My brother refused said he wouldn't throw his gun on the ground - what is your problem?

One way or another the situation was diffused and the end result was that the police officer chewed them out for hunting...told them they shouldn't be there. Then drove off. They continued their hunt. Sadly, in today's world, it would be a brief news headline
"two armed minors involved in a shoot out with police".

With that said, the man that was killed pretty much said that he would refuse to go to jail. Hopefully the officers had body cameras so everyone can know how it went down.

"the Bundys and several other occupiers reportedly left the refuge to attend a community meeting 100 miles away in John Day, Ore. About halfway to their destination, the FBI and the Oregon State Police ordered them to stop." - www.washingtonpost.com

Appears they were on their way to perform their 1st amendment rights and were detained from doing so.

Interesting how certain groups in this country are allowed to loot, burn, riot, protest, destroy, and cause the taxpayers to foot the bill for millions of dollars in damage time after time whenever they feel "wronged" while other groups are arrested or killed.

That is so true. I hope these terrorists are put in jail and made to pay restitution for the expense that they have incurred on all of us US Taxpayers. Not to mention all their unpaid grazing fees. All their leases to FEderal lands should be declared null and void.

Who? - these people who actually incited fear and terror, physically injured people, destroyed private and public property? People that actually took control of portions of a city, while families hid in their homes in fear?
Never once heard them referred to as domestic terrorists or heard demands for blood.
Weird that way.

To be fair the snap shot above was taken while the security officers made fun of some of the people in attendance.
Unfortunately for them they didn't know that the mike was live and could clearly pick up what they were saying...shortly afterwards they both got text messages...
