In at Les Schwab this am getting snow tires off of the chick magnet and Youngest File's buick.
Guy in front of me has a nearer truck he's probably 60 and is a familiar face in town-
Counter guy- Just so you know what's going on with your tpms.
customer- yeah- the light's on- everything's fine.
counter guy- Well before we would tell you that your sensors aren't working and you'd say how much and I'd say $205, and you'd say I'm a grown up I can drive with the light on. Now the new regs are that if we service the vehicle, we have to ensure the system is working and the light is off when it leaves here. So we have to put in new sensors and that will be $205....
On most models when you disconnect the battery the system will reset turning all warning lights off.
They may or may not come back on.
Saves having to go the the dealer every time a light comes on to connect to their privately coded software.

Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery shuts the emmision sensor idiot lite off on my wife's aveo.
Black tape over the light! In LS defense, it is a liability issue, if they let you leave with the light on and something goes wrong, somebody will get sued, just trying to protect themseves. How did we ever make it driving vehicles before all the electronics on modern vehicles?

[sarcasm]But I'm still an adult and I'm not paying $205 for some idiot light to tell me my tire is low.[/sarcasm]
So what do they do now? hold my car hostage and call the tpm police?
Liability? Maybe, but mostly a handle to try to force you to use their services.
I'll sign something that says they told me about a risk, but I'll get very upset if they won't give me my car back.
There may be some such law, I don't know. The TPMS came about because of the rash of crashes a few years back with Ford Explorers and Firestone tires, the FEDS did mandate that they be phased in on ALL vehicles over a certain time frame, I think everything from one ton pickups and down now have these by Federal law, it wouldn't surprise me to know that the same law requires tire dealers to hold the vehicle hostage if they find a defect! I do know that getting a flat fixed with those on board costs more money even if there is nothing wrong.
